D&D 5E (2014) Legend Lore says 'story not rules' (3/4)

Maybe, with regards to oozes, it's a consideration of "how does one physically disadvantage a mindless, shapeless being that doesn't care whether you wiggle a sword in it or spread it on toast?" Sure you can trip a guy and knock him off his feet, but why is it mechanically just as easy to...

D&D 5E (2014) Legend Lore says 'story not rules' (3/4)

I don't think a "players-have-no-rights" or controlling DM situation is doomed to happen with a flexible basic system based on DM rulings. As far as rules for preventing DM abuse, it's not about player entitlement or DM entitlement. I think you only really need one rule. I've found Wheaton's...

Anyone else seeing floating monsters on the DnD site?

Or everyone is all busy gearing up for Emerald City Comic Con this weekend and didn't have time to really pay attention to updating the site without getting a few code glitches?

    D&D 5E (2014) Will there be such a game as D&D Next?

Thing is, I don't think Skill Challenges were very satisfying for ... well most people. A way to resolve quick fights without having to use a completely different mechanic than a regular fight is desirable for some, especially those who like to throw words like "immersion" around when detailing...

    D&D 5E (2014) New L&L for 22/1/13 D&D Next goals, part 3

Oh, I agree it's a pity. But I would say I'm very far from being a lone pitiable figure amongst a large pool of casual/regular players. I've certainly used combat powers in non-combat situations, and argued for creative uses, but when sometimes it works and sometimes doesn't, depending on...

    D&D 5E (2014) New L&L for 22/1/13 D&D Next goals, part 3

Page 42? What are you guys talking about? Ok, to be truthful I understand from context what you're talking about, but I've been playing 4e for nearly three years now and this is the first I've heard of it. But then I haven't been frequenting forums for that long either, nor have I read the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Basic/Standard/Advanced?

I figure "advanced" may also include more crazy options they've obliquely mentioned, like working in mechanics reminiscent of other systems like FATE or Burning Wheel.

D&D 5E (2014) Wealth and Starting Magic Items for 5th Level Playtest Characters?

Does that mean non-magic items are "useless"? There are degrees of what is useful and the whole idea of magic items is that they're "extra" useful. Which usually means, above-baseline, right? I think you're mistaking your own preferences for those of everyone else.

D&D 5E (2014) Wealth and Starting Magic Items for 5th Level Playtest Characters?

It polls well because people hated having magic items be just something characters were just assumed to have instead of earned. I'd rather have a note saying, "magic items will make things easier for players" (which is kind of no-brainer common sense) instead of "not having magic items will...

D&D 5E (2014) Wealth and Starting Magic Items for 5th Level Playtest Characters?

Common? Uncommon? Is there such a thing for magic items in 5e? But really it depends on what type of game/story you and your players are playing/telling. Magic items and loot are not built into the math of the system now so they should be just fine without any +1 widgets at all.

    D&D 5E (2014) Bring Back Gnomes!

The races seem pretty simple to home-brew. Anyone have any write-ups for what they'd like to see with gnomes?

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest: Yay or Nay?

I agree with this. The weakened arcane magic specialty really cuts back on the interesting character concepts you can get from pairing it with a non-magic class. Maybe the multi-class rules will bring that versatility back... but at the moment it's just disappointing.

D&D 5E (2014) The Return of the HealBot

I'm really liking GrahamWills solution: Let each cleric have a certain amount of resources for healing (whether at-will, encounter or daily based). Add in some extra domain rules that stipulate the conditions for healing, letting the "healing" domains do what the classic cleric does perhaps...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dissapointed with Attunement

Exactly. You can still get what will most likely turn out to be static benefits from magic items, but attunement seems like a way to avoid the magic item power bloat and choice indecision that 4th edition ended up giving you, which also happens to help speed up play.

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest Packet - Magic Items, Updated XP, Monster Traits

Well, the sorcerer and warlock updates were staggered shortly after the initial release of the 2nd packet. I'll cross my fingers that something similar could happen this time. ... perhaps setting myself up for disappointment?

D&D 5E (2014) October Playtest Packet - Magic Items, Updated XP, Monster Traits

Yeah, just noticed this. A little disappointed at the lack of tweaks to classes, specialties, and backgrounds, but I guess they're just picking on one or two things to focus on with each update.

D&D 5E (2014) New Legend and Lore is up! Magic Systems as DM Modules

I agree with this, and actually think 5e is on the right track to model it. Regardless of which spell system they use (though I prefer spellpoints for them), you give them a specialized spell list according to their heritage, and then build in uncontrolled effects that come into play when their...
