I know we aren't supposed to read real players behind the characters anymore, but I often think of Durkon as being played by a fellow who everyone loves, who everyone considers the premier comedic player at the game table, but who is also the player that can only make like one game every couple...

I usually start with a concept, but the first thing I do is ask the DM what races are available. I've found that most DMs already have an idea of what they think appropriate for the when/why of my character joining the party, and I roll with that. I honestly can't think of a single time since...

D&D is not designed or set up in such a way that it can be enjoyed by those outside the game observing one in progress. I would wager that an observer wouldn't necessarily enjoy a storyhour fully unless they are in the game, or unless the writer transcends the genre.
