House of the Dragon spoiler thread

I thought the episode was great. I felt that the Daemon sub-plot paid off in both the scene with viserys and with how it played out with Rivermen. Looking forward to the last episode next week.

D&D General I'm a Creep, I'm a Powergamer: How Power Creep Inevitably Destroys Editions

So long as everyone is increasing at the same time/pace it isn't a prob. It also creates a need for power creep to get an advantage over other players in PVP In a game where it's not a competition between players I find there's no issue at all.

D&D General I'm a Creep, I'm a Powergamer: How Power Creep Inevitably Destroys Editions

Power creep isn't really an issue to me outside of PVP, which is something I tend to avoid in TTRPGs. As to power creep being the death of editions, I just don't see it.

    Spoilers Deadpool & Wolverine (Spoilers)

I had a lot of fun with this one. It was probably helped by the fact that the last 4 films I've been to have all been arthouse and/or Horror films: Evil does not exist Kinds of Kindness Maxxxine Longlegs ...so I was up for a fun action flick. The film feels like a love letter to Wolverine...

The Willingness to Embrace Joy in Things.

I can understand how going to Disneyland would lead to this epiphany. I went to Tokyo Disneyland (and Tokyo SeaDisney the following day) about 8 years ago. The minute I walked through the gate I was like a 10 year old kid again. This was one of the points being made in The Last Jedi… It made...

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

This whole thing has been a great example of the Streisand Effect. The more people try to argue against, or discredit it, the more attention it brings to Gygax’s sexism.

Spoilers Star Wars: The Acolyte [Spoilers]

I read recently that Yord Fandar was based on a character Headland played in a Star Wars ttrpg.

D&D Historian Benn Riggs On Gary Gygax & Sexism

Nope, it was the first definition I got when I looked up the word 'game' You use the word 'generally' meaning often but not always, which is true, games will often have competitive elements, but they are not required to be a game. There are plenty of video games that doesn't really have a...

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I'm fine with separating art and artist. But, too often I find when people say they're separating the art from the artist, what they really mean is that they separate the artist from the artists' actions (because they like the art).

Spoilers Star Wars: The Acolyte [Spoilers]

I thought it was a great example of how being Neutral can be better than being 'Good' or noble. Sol thinks he's doing what is right and honorable: saving children from being sacrificed by cultists. Unfortunately it's a miscommunication. The twins were told they would have to sacrifice a part...

House of the Dragon spoiler thread

I enjoyed the episode a lot. As for Aegon surviving, I'm pretty sure you can hear him wheezing. Also Aemond has his sword drawn like he was planning to finish the job just as Cole turns up. I really like the way the previous episode started with the Bracken / Blackwood feud, and how that's...

D&D General Do You D&D OSR?

I started with 2E, played some 3E. These days it's 5E, but recently someone in our group wanted to run Dolmenwood using OSE. We played a couple of adventures before deciding it's not the game for us, so we're planning to convert the campaign to 5E.

D&D General On Early D&D and Problematic Faves: How to Grapple with the Sins of the Past

I think you may be underestimating Socrates, Descartes and Nietzsche.

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

Yeah, Advantage/Disadvantage is another factor in the success of 5E. Which, in a way plays into 'rulings over rules'. I guess I should put a disclaimer here about this being my opinion.

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

I've used 'Rule of Cool' in conjunction with Inspiration Points, letting the players spend a point if they want to do something outside the game rules. It worked pretty well.

D&D General Alternate thought - rule of cool is bad for gaming

Yep, it's why 5E's 'rulings over rules' philosophy has made it so successful.
