    Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Eh, not really. The aesthetic changes don't bother me, though I don't love them either. But '90 Trek depicted the Klingons as a violent but functional society. These are fanatics and savages. So much so that that the human (and humane) solution to defeat them is to Same goes for the Romulans...

    Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

I've considered the All Access stuff as a soft reboot from the very beginning. That was obvious to me watching the pilot for Discovery. My problem is that the references to previous Trek keep distracting me: Klingons don't look and don't act like Klingons, Romulans look like elves and act like...

D&D General Origin of the name Stirge

It recently dawned on me that the Stirge monster from D&D seems to be related to the Strix, a creature from ancient Roman mythology "a bird of ill omen,(...), that fed on human flesh and blood" (Strix (mythology) - Wikipedia). The plural for Strix in English can be "Striges", and so I was...

    D&D 3.x Multiclassing in D&D 3rd Edition

I barred multiclassing from my Curse of Strahd campaign. In my experience it almost always leads to some game-breaking combo or something. If you want to play a mage-thief, or a mage-fighter, or most of the other classic combinations, you got some sub-class for that. If you want to play a...

    OSR OSR and compatibility?

The other thing is that in games derived from basic/old D&D a first level character hits AC 0 with a 19 on the die, and an unarmored character has AC 9. In AD&D-derived games it's 20 and 10. So you might want to tweak that in the situation where it's relevant. Apart from that, I would say no...

Planescape and the AD&D ruleset do not feel like D&D to you?

D&D 5E (2014) DC Comics Publishing Dungeons & Dragons Sourcebook

I've been reading it since it came out. I believe they're now at issue 5 or 6. The art is stunning but the plot and setting are a little too obvious.

    D&D General $299 D&D Anniversary Sapphire Dice

Totally agree. The logo should be on the "1", as the picture on the ace in a deck of cards. It's a small thing but it bugs me.

This is might be the best rpg-related content I've read this year. :ROFLMAO:

D&D General Worlds of Design: Chaotic Neutral is the Worst

While my way of using alignment is similar what some people here described (the lawful-chaotic axis represents the relationship with the powers-that-be, the good-evil axis represents altruism vs egoism), I agree that no D&D book I know of explained alignment that way.

D&D General A Chat With 'Solasta' 5E Video Game Developers

I would love to see a faithful transposition of 5E. What makes or breaks a game like this is monsters AI. Let's hope they do a good job with that.

Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!

That's all true, but most stuff out there, like the published 5ed campaigns for example, simply doesn't have the moral complexity to support that kind of narrative.

Chaotic Good Is The Most Popular Alignment!

Not really that strange. If you think about the distribution of alignments in a fantasy society, most civilians are bound to be neutral-something, while adventurers should favor chaotic. You go from town to town, taking odd jobs and trying to do good in the meantime, that's chaotic good. If...

D&D 3.x Jonathan Tweet: Prologue to Third Edition

I liked the rationalizations they did in 3e, like with the armor class and the saving throws, but it all came apart for me when I attempted to play it and realized the combat system as written was a board game. That, and some oddities like civilian NPCs with levels. The merchant giving you a...

OD&D Jon Peterson Shares Aronson's Original OD&D Illusionist

I've always thought so. You summon monsters but you evoke energies. It works, I guess.

How often do you use the Inspiration rules?

In my gaming group we use the variant where players can give each other inspiration. If one player awards more than one point in a session, the DM gets one too, and the DM's points stack. This worked pretty well for us: once per evening, each player gets to "pay a compliment" to another and to...

    Whatever Happened to D&D's Underdog?

First level PCs are hardly heroic or competent. I think 0 level was more a novelty than anything else, or maybe some people felt that "it wasn't realistic" to start at 1st level. I remember there were some notes to play a magic academy campaign, with kids as PCs, in GAZ3 - The Principalities Of...

Look To Hollywood Blockbusters For Adventure Design Guidance

I'd rather be inspired by good movies. Star Trek was infuriatingly dumb. The Force Awakens boring and derivative.

Swords & Wizardry Is Back With New Art And New Energy

I think the quality of the new pictures is mostly better than those in the old edition, but it just feels like they really wanted to find in the game something that is not there. The new art has got this fairy tale vibe, and think some manga influences, and those are not the first things I think...
