    List of Cliches

I think it would be fun to create a list of fantasy adventure elements that have been so used or overused that they become cliche. If they are things that are slightly unrealistic (relatively speaking), so much the better. Examples: WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME: Adventurers inevitably...

    Explain Magic: The Gathering

Thank you to everybody who has replied. I think I have a good feel for the game now. I can see the appeal, but I barely have the time for the RPGing that I get in. Maybe when I win the lottery. :)

    Worst pun ever.

I know "hin" from the Realms. It is particularly appropriate with the "Halflings Gone Wild!" comment, since Cinemax is known for adult-oriented programming late at night. Presumably, Hin-amax is owned by HBO (Halfling Box Office).

    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

When the DM said, "So nobody is actually touching the artifact?", I chime in with, "I touch it!" DM: "Make a Fortitude save." We had already determined that this was a hideously evil artifact that reeked of necromancy and allowed BBEGs to create undead creatures. Doh. Made my save, though.

    Explain Magic: The Gathering

Thanks again. A few more: How long do games last? Is there a time limit? How are the cards randomized? How do you keep somebody from manipulating the order of the cards? Are the cards in one player's deck kept secret from the opponent? Maybe I missed this, but are silver and gold cards...

    Explain Magic: The Gathering

So, how many cards are there in a deck? Does it vary? What is the advantage of limiting the number of colors in your deck? How many sets have there been, and how many cards in each set, and how much do they cost? What the heck is a Black Lotus? Thanks

    Worst pun ever.

From the same game: DM: There doesn't appear to be anything special about the evil altar. Player: So, it isn't intelligent? DM: No. Player: So there's no evil altar ego?

    Explain Magic: The Gathering

I'm not sure where to ask this, so forgive me if there is another forum for this. Without going into large amounts of detail, can somebody explain how to play Magic: The Gathering? I'm just curious, since it seems like a fairly expensive hobby, even compared to RPGs.

What's wrong with the big companies?!

Sigh. Companies are nothing other than collections of people. People can be stupid. Reasons for laying off people: - Management let their egos get the better of them, and so they hired more people than they can afford. - Management is lazy, and cutting staff is an easy way to reduce...

    Evil network?

First, this is an obviously silly question. It was meant to be. I was interested in what folks had to say. Second, greenlighting shows is good. Insisting that a sci-fi show be dumbed down to reach a broader audience shows a lack of understanding of the genre. Explicitly telling a show's...

    Worst pun ever.

PLAYER #1: We'll return to the inn, take a bath and get some rest... PLAYER #2: ...see what's on cable. DM: Heh, the cable options are a little limited. PLAYER #3: Halflings Gone Wild! PLAYER #2: That would be on Hin-amax.

    What happened to Cyre?

Just out of curiosity, I would like to know for folks who are running Eberron campaigns: do you have your own explanation for how Cyre was destroyed, and what is it (if it isn't still a secret).

(rpg) Traveller -- tell me why you like it?

When I was a kid, what attracted me to Traveller: - Rules to design things -- star systems, space ships, robots, computers. It is a micromanager's dream, with enough standard examples that you don't HAVE to design from scratch. - Characters who were older than 18-years old, and who didn't...

    Evil network?

From the standpoint of a Sci-fi/Fantasy fan, which network is the most EVIL? I'm tempted to vote Fox, for screweing up Firefly.

    Best DC-area ski resort?

We're going to try a trip out west, maybe, but we want to ski more than once this year. Nothing is likely to compare to the Alps trip. It was two Americans amidst a bunch of English and Australians in a private chalet about 20' from the slope in Courcheval (Three Valleys). They got a huge...

    Underdark gallery and checklist up

Sigh, and my SO has indicated she doesn't want me buying more minis...I hate to disappoint her. :) From looking at the figs: Balor: Gets a 10 on the very cool scale. Ankheg, Roper, and Winter Wolf: What took them so long? :) Dwarf Ancestor: Anybody know what this is? I've never seen it...

    post-apocalyptic campaigns!

Just occured to me that one end-of-the-world disaster hasn't been already mentioned: the world falls apart because everybody is too busy gaming! :) There was definitely a Sliders episode that had a plot like that. I would belieive it :p

    Best DC-area ski resort?

Heya, My SO and I recently got back into skiing after a long break (with a trip to the French Alps, no less). We live in the Washington, DC, area, and I was wondering what the best resorts were within a reasonable weekend trip distance? I grew up in New England, so I was used to resorts like...

Office Space: Special Edition, With Flair

Quasi-related. Went to see the hypnotist Flip Orley at the DC Improv last night. I kept thinking, "Maybe I'll get hypnotised, and decide to blow off work in way that gets me promoted." LOL "I understand you've been missing a lot of work lately." "I wouldn't say I've been missing it, Bob."
