How much would it cost to hire a rpg writer?

I'd have to disagree that you need to be an expert to get a dollar+ per word, at least for short magazine, etc. articles. My wife routinely gets 1.50 a word for writing scintillating articles on ERP for the IT executive, but she's no expert on computers, ERP or supply chain management believe...

How much would it cost to hire a rpg writer?

Is that for bulk writing, game writing? My wife does freelance articles for various business and IT magazines and gets from 1-2 dollars per word. This is the average in the magazine industry. Small time magazines and newsletters may pay only 50 cents per word. Admittedly these articles are...

Classic dungeons: What makes them great?

We have just finished with Caverns of Thracia (COT) and are about to start with Against the Giants (G1-3) (both of which I've palyed and run before). Here's my take on these classics in view of your list. SPOLIER ALERT G1 has pretty low monster divesity, what it does have is monsters in...

Does D&D Need to Appeal to the Mainstream?

...and grossly incomplete. You needed Chainmail to play IIRC and there were only rules for you-swing-I-swing combat (if you had Chainmail). Climbing, jumping, swimming, sneaking, flanking, attacking from horseback, attempting anything besides swinging a sword or casting a spell, nadda, no...

How do fans of OTHER RPGs handle new editions?

I agree. 3e is not my cup of tea so much, OD&D and 1e being much more so. But it is only a game, the versions I prefer are not the best, nor perfect, nor the only way and nor are the other editions crap. On turning folks off, I can personally attest that when I sought to recruit players for...

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

I wouldn't agree with GMless play. What does he mean by story? When I think control over the story it is players actions which determine which way it goes, i.e., there is no plot protection for anyone. The BBEG could die in the first encounter by bad luck or thinking outside the box by...

D&D 4E 4E: What we think we know

Who needs the OGL? Seriously. You can't copyright or trademark rules and there are ways to say on the cover "compatible with..." legally. The ability to say "usuable with..." "compatible with..." etc. is not limited to the world of games. The only thing left is product identity, and that is...

Is threat of death a necessary element of D&D?

Why actually yes, as that is Squad Leader. If a broken unit fails a moral check they are removed from the game, i.e., they ran away. Which is a different result than KIA, a very hard result to achieve. I have to say Squad Leader seemed very genuine and worthwhile.

Ryan Dancey on Redefining the Hobby (Updated: time elements in a storytelling game)

I'll have to pass on what I see Ryan saying. In the 'ole adventure format I thought players created the story by the actions they chose. That is, the story is your classical campaign journal entry. I find these storie more intriguing as you never know as player or GM exactly where things...

    D&D Minis & Lead Paint?

The danger, as you probably know, in lead paint is not so much a large one-time exposure, but accumulation in the body over time. That is, your body has no mechanism to remove it or most heavy metals, it builds up in you over time. Adults can tolerate a fair amount of this but young children...

D&D: High Fantasy vs. Sword & Sorcery

I don't think D&D (except maybe OD&D) fits in either of your categories or is somewhere in between. The amount of magic in a D&D (1e to 3.x e) game as allowable by the rules is so far above what is found in your JRRT and Lewis examples to place D&D in the Over-the-Top Fantasy category.

[DannyAlcatraz] What do you do about the D&D-only player?

The biggest reason I hear for D&D only, is it is the system they know and they don't want to learn another. I try to run games where rules knowledge is not needed. What is more useful is knowledge and experience from real life and "common sense." So I'll pick a system that supports anyone...

Is threat of death a necessary element of D&D?

I think you hit the nail on the head, there needs to be a threat of loss/failure that means something to the PLAYERS but it doesn't need to be death. Without the risk of failure/loss success is not nearly so sweet or meaningful. That being said death is a great one which I always keep in my...

Why Do People Care About Canon?

I think it is the trademark holder who decides what is canon, i.e., what can and canonot be called F.R. or what have you. But I'm biased, I never want to play canon, tell me your setting, your world. I love Treebore's take, canon is what people think is true, but what is true is for...

Computers beat up my role player

I'd say it's a matter of degree, the worst pen-and-paper RPGs I've been in have been more limiting than many CRPGs I've played. CRPGs are really just like railroad campaigns with limited tracks and a myopic rules as written, by the book, "if the book doesn't explicitly say fighters can climb...

    What is 'normal' for you?

    - 2-4 players running 2 characters and maybe an NPC each; - homebrew pretty much all the way, campaign world in use since 1978; - adventures about 70% modified modules, 30% homebrew; - sessions 4-5 hours triweekly on average; - use rule where if not below -half/CON and sufficient potions or...

    Tell me about Greyhawk

I'd heard that the original homebrew Greyhawk campaign was run off a map of the US with Greyhawk being Chicago. Any truth to this? I'd love to see that map if it still exists.

Macguffin quest without a macguffin, how would you respond?

I really like the idea of no mcguffin. It teaches players not to make metagame assumptions. People and legends can be wrong in a fantasy world just like in our world. Just because there is a legend of a mcguffin doesn't mean there is one. Sure people want to believe it exists to give them...

Killing as fun and games: a question for the Good Guys

What he said. The original question is based on what I hope is the false premise that the only way to gain xp in D&D is to kill or steal. I'm hoping it's false because it is just this kind of thinking, in part, that gave D&D a bad rap. Even if it is only a game, a game which reptitively...
