Will 2011 be the last year of Wizards D&D?

Yep, time for a title change! ;) I have to agree that all the existential angst about the meaning of Essentials is on the wrong side of the signal-to-noise ratio. Essentials is for selling D&D in Target and Walmart (huge US retail chains) with a handful of idiot-proof SKUs. Period. Everything...

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

    Addicted to schadenfreude? Kinky! ;)

Wizards: Musings on the new DDi disaster

Haha, agreed. WotC has always (even before Hasbro) been a two-steps-forward, one-step-back (or even, in this case 1-forward, 2-back) kind of company. This really is just par for the course with these guys, so in a way its not surprising. Unfortunately. This mess will all get cleaned up...

    Online Character Builder is LIVE!

Having spent some more time with this at home tonight; it runs pretty good for me here, but I have shload of RAM sitting on FiOS fiber connection. What bothers me is the poor value. While the cloud storage, online-only, no local DB, 20 character limit stuff never bothered me at all, I agree that...

Web-Based CB is Live (Official Announcement)

Interesting. I'm a developer, so I know how focus works, and I tried selecting multiple points throughout the client screen area, and could not get mouse scrolling to work. I will try it again tonight on a better platform at home, but on my rather lame office PC running XPSP3 with Chrome, I...

    Online Character Builder is LIVE!

Since it appears to be mostly feature-complete, it would be a beta rather than an alpha. A beta not ready for prime time, nonetheless. It runs fine for me in Chrome on XP at work, if a bit slow. I expect better performance at home tonight on my personal equipment. I've imported some of my LFR...

Web-Based CB is Live (Official Announcement)

Heh, I hope the digital studio guys weren't planning on taking off for the holidays just yet... ;) All I have time for at work is importing some of my LFR characters (from iplay4e, lol), and some rough spot that jumped right out at me: Character sheet has no mouse scrolling; very annoying...

November 16th release for Web-based Character Builder

Regarding the Silverlight sub-topic, while I don't work with it directly myself, I was still getting that nagging feeling that I'd missed a meeting or something. So for the coding gear heads here, I found this afternoon's Silverlight article on Ars useful: Silverlight, HTML5, and Microsoft's...

November 16th release for Web-based Character Builder

I tend to agree, but it's possible there could continue to be a space for a 3rd party software. What will really suck is: no character export (they've said this will likely come in the future), no character API, and no mobile silverlight interface. If WotC only releases a desktop form factor...

November 16th release for Web-based Character Builder

Heh, I knew they had to be cooking with silverlight, so none of this comes as a surprise to me. However, there will undoubtedly be some problems, both real and imagined. So fasten your seat belts and return your tray tables to the upright position as we may be experiencing some turbulence. :heh:

    Living Forgotten Realms minion variants

Some LFR mods have minions that don't die until the end of their next turn.

If you already have 4th ed books, do you need Essentials?

I would like to add that the Rules Compendium is more than just ''essentials". It is a general purpose rule book that is equally useful with any 4E super/sub-set game. Still mostly redundant with previous books, but the rules updates, better copy, and all-around thoroughness add significant value.

    DM's Kit?

You missed the party. The short answer is no, nothing much new if you have the DMGs and/or the RC.

Best books to get for getting into 4th Ed?

This is a really good point; you don't need any of the player oriented books unless you also want to play as well. Since you appear to be an experienced D&D gamer, and you're not looking for DM advice, I'd absolutely start with Rules Compendium and the two DS hardcovers, and your basically set...

    Hammerfast, population 12,000! what?

LOL, WotC has been screwing up setting demographics and map scales long before Mike started working there. Ever seen a thread discussing the demo/scale of Khorvaire (Eberron)?

    New DM's Kit? Anybody?

The RC is also for us old 4E hands as well, so we're very much part of the market for that book, above all the other Essentials products. I'm glad they released it early. :D So, for D&D newbs: Red Box + HotFL1 + DM's Kit gets your campaign through 4th-level; HotFL2 + RC + Monster Vault (+...

    New DM's Kit? Anybody?

I don't think the DM's Book includes some of the esoterica like flight or mounted combat (I don't have it handy, atm). HotFL and the DM's Kit are truly 'essentials'-focussed products that are about hitting the ground running. What the RC is really good at is covering corner cases and settling...

    Hammerfast, population 12,000! what?

In my view there are two distinct visions of what Hammerfast is. One is a mighty dwarven citadel and regional trade center... [rpg.net] The other is a 32-page product that sells for $15... [rpgmusings.com] My answer to this dichotomy is that they are, in fact, two distinct locations. The...

    New DM's Kit? Anybody?

That pretty well covers it. Heroes of the F'n Lands has character creation/advencement, basic skills and combat rules, and some magic items. Presented from the player POV. Dungeon Master's Book (DM's Kit) has detailed combat rules, skill challenges, traps, some more magic items, and lots and...

    New DM's Kit? Anybody?

Nope. This is essentials we're talking about. I'm surprised at some of the expectations for this kit.
