D&D General The Fate of Bargle

Not only is Bargle guilty, he has also acted a spy for the sinister “Master” who has tried to conquer the Known World, at least twice.

D&D General WotC Reveals New Information and Covers for 'Keys from the Golden Vault'

Looks great - exactly the sort of thing I would love to run for my group. But I won't buy it, and won't run it.

I really don't think it should be called the "ORC license"

I was going to chime in with a hearty defence of the ORC name - but I think I like yours even better.

D&D 5E (2024) Should MAD Classes be addressed in OneD&D

Agreed. More MAD (across all classes) will open up character creation and make it more interesting. Ranged spell attacks should use Dex, fancy battle moves should use Int, etc.

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Cleric & Revised Species Playtest Includes Goliath

I like the Smite Undead, but I really dislike giving Divine Spark to everyone - seems lazy to have a ranged heal provided by default to everyone. I prefer most characters having to chose between a touch-range Cure spell and a weaker Healing Words.

D&D 5E (2014) The Monetization of D&D and other Role Playing Games

Well for me, a good adventure is a bunch of cooking ingredients and a recipe. But when I'm doing the cooking, I can choose to modify the recipe and possibly swap out ingredients. So what I liked about Dragon Heist is that it provided 1) a fun premise 2) some nice set pieces 3) some memorable...

D&D 5E (2014) The Monetization of D&D and other Role Playing Games

I ran Dragon Heist, and it was probably our most successful campaign. Dragon Heist is an excellent adventure with a couple of baffling poor design choices (which can be easily fixed). The split of adventure content into mutually-exclusive 'seasons' makes no sense (a flaw also found in Storm...

Official News Level Up & Electronic Tools

Another vote for Foundry support (maybe a stretch goal?). I just took the plunge, moving away from Roll20. Although I liked the direct support from WOTC (i.e., could purchase an adventure directly), I found the interface for Roll20 slow and clunky. Plus, with large maps, the game pace would...

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell nerfed!

I think the problem with Counterspell is that how it is implemented is not fun, and not the idea of a negation spell in general. The spell would be much better if every counter spell was some sort of opposed roll rather than an automatic negation below a certain level.

    D&D 5E (2014) Counterspell nerfed!

Exactly. What the game needs is better, more useful stat-blocks to make things easier for DMs, not creating dumbed-down, one-off monster effects that interact poorly with the rule system and with player expectations. Plus, given the proliferation of virtual tools like DnD Beyond and VTTs, we can...

D&D General When did D&D gods first rely on their worshipers?

I would guess that a lot of RPG writers saw the original Star Trek episode where Kirk and company meets Apollo.

    AD&D 2E What's a Good 2e Low Level Adventure?

I always thought Under Illefarn was pretty good.

Monte Cook Games' Darkest House Is Designed For Online Play

It looks like a really useful product for people who game online with basic setups like Zoom/Discord. It doesn't look like a convenient product for people who are using a full VTT like Roll20 or Foundry.

    D&D 5E (2014) A truly horrifying Age of Worms

Having played AoW in 3.5, clerics or paladins with the right prestige class could definitely make things easier for the party. Plus, cheap wands and scrolls... But the campaign was still a meat-grinder. Characters seem more durable in 5E, but with fewer spell slots and magic items, I don't...

Upcoming Age of Sigmar: Soulbound Releases

I think the one thing keeping me from getting this game is knowing how distracted I will be with all the terrible alternative spellings of common words like "endrineering" and "aelves". That's on GW, not C7, but still...

I Might Have to Run a Bad RPG System Next Week!

Which version of WFRP would you be running (there are 4)? 1E (which TEW was originally written for) is a bit clunky but works. 2E takes 1E and systemizes it a bit. Works a bit better, but I think loses some of the original charm. You can run 1E adventures with 2E with virtually no changes...
