Worlds of Design: The Plight of the New RPG—Quality of Writing

My 2 cents on this subject: i would like to be an author... In the sense that i started writing a RPG. I am facing several issues: 1. I am not an english native speaker therefore writing in english could result into a text not flowing 2. I have never written anything before this experience and...

    RPG theory: in-game balancing

You got the point: i never played 5E as i stopped at 3.5; with that system, for your 10th level PC it was difficult to suffer a damage large enough to die in a single event: this is why the players are not used to find their PC dead... In a game where you can be killed at the 3rd/4th blow of...

If you had to build a system, what stats would you put inside ?

Ditto! You'd first think to the game you have in mind and afterwards you'd deploy it by means also of the stats... For instance i made up my FRPG and defined 4(+1) stats because i did not need too many definitions of the persona. Be sure to do a checklist of all the main rules/game mechanics you...

    The Next TTRPG (nomenclature)

I'd propose to do the other way round: keep TTRPG as a name to point out the analog/play-at-the-table and make up a new defintition for the "digital" forms of gaming. Btw the double T could easily stand for "true tabletop", isnt that? Re to the new ways of gaming a definition could be DCRPG...

    RPG theory: in-game balancing

That is interesting, if you have some links or hints, pls let me know for i'd be really interested in reading about such a topic! Correct, but that is not the point i want to discuss: i am not complaining about rules... i am complaning about the fact that whenever you have a 7th level party...

    RPG Evolution: Publisher vs. Algorithm

In another thread i tried to discuss whether or not this is the right question for anyone who wants to be a publisher/writer/creator. Do you enter the creative process to produce smtg "wanted" by the largest share of consumers or to generate the intellectual product you are looking for? The...

    RPG theory: readings

For at least the last 10 years (if not more) i used a website as one of thr most useful resources for my collecting activity. After so many time i discovered the "other side" of the same website: https://www.darkshire.net/~jhkim/rpg/theory/ I have just started reading this part (along with the...

Worlds of Design: Quality vs. Quantity of RPG Play

Interesting topic... What is underlying is the fact that the success of a game is measured in nr of sessions rather than sales. It would be very interesting to see a comparison between the two rankings (games by sessions vs games by sales). An overall comment: at first i didn't get the target...

    RPG theory: in-game balancing

Thanks for the last couple of comments, some side notes though: 1. Combat/fight is not the only context where the concept of balancing is used... I mention them as they are the most immediate and easy application of balancing 2. Prob being a non native english speaker, i misused some words and...

What game is the best simulationist game?

Please do not forget "sword's path" by Leading Edge: possibly the most detailed game for combat... The publisher is the same of pheonix commando already mentioned here above!

    RPG theory: in-game balancing

Well, your comments are definitely right and i have nothing against your assumptions and conclusions. My point is slightly different: i believe that in-game world should be similar to reality. This means that, as an adventurer, a PC should find himself (along with the whole party) against a wide...

    RPG theory: in-game balancing

Well, going by points: 1. It depends what is your perspective and final goal: if this is maximise the efficiency in encounters (i.e. you want to have only fights with a "balanced" counterpart for the sake of earing XP), that is fine... But have even considered that even these "outlier events"...

How do you feel about stretch goals?

I do not back anymore KS or Indiegogo... But when i used to do that i had the impression that: 1. Stretch bonus items can be of 2 types mainly: add-ons to the object of the fund-raising (namely: color print rather than b/w, additional pages, HB rather than softback...) or "useless" stuff (a die...

    [+] Rules light RPGs

Great great great comment! I have to bookmark it somehow! This is one of the key features i want to preserve and ideally extend over time in the game i have written... I hope I found a way to prolong this status of "looking at the world with the eyes of a child", or i hope so. Where is the quote...
