    Odd-Numbered Ability Scores

To be honest, if they're going to simply go for +1 per point above 10 and -1 per point below 10, I'd rather see the DCs simply fudged by up 10 so you get the mathematically equivalent but much easier "add your ability score" rather than needing to have a separate bonus at all.

    Odd-Numbered Ability Scores

From the sound of things, they're wanting to emphasise the use of ability checks as saves and skills, and de-emphasise the numerical bonuses you get for your level. If they want to do that then they're going to have to either ramp up the ability score bonuses or simply do away with them and use...

Is anybody else seeing C&C here?

I think, given the limited info we have, that 5e is currently still very much of a cipher. People are seeing hints of things that are slightly similar to stuff they like (or in some cases stuff they don't like) and subconsciously filling in the blanks and convincing themselves that this what the...

After DDXP, how are you feeling about D&En?

With apologies to the Pointer Sisters... Tonight's the night we're gonna make it happen Tonight we'll put all other things aside Get your dice and show me your edition We're going' for those playtests in the night I want to read you, play you Create characters with you I want to try your...

    Pace Yourselves

But if we don't start now, we won't have time to get entrenched into our Edition War ranks (with a good supply of stock comparisons and stock criticisms) before the play tests start!

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

You're almost certainly correct, but my worry is that if they're reducing bonuses across the board (which the hints seem to show) then d20 + mod may end up with a random factor that's far too great compared to the ability factor.

Skills - what is your preference

I'm certainly not bothered by the system it looks like we're getting. In fact it's my favourite way of doing skills. When I was writing the Dark Dungeons retro-clone a couple of years ago it's exactly how I did the skill system. It can be summed up (in much more neutral language) as: The DM...

Seminar Transcript - Reimagining Skills and Ability Scores

I prefer "3d6, optionally reroll the lowest die (or dice if there's a tie)". The distribution curve is pretty similar to "4d6 drop lowest", but it's a bit better at avoiding overly low scores while simultaneously giving out fewer overly high scores (but still more than straight 3d6 rolls do).

Which is almost exactly how Dark Dungeons handles skills! They're just bonuses to ability checks in certains situations. Dark Dungeons does have a default list of skills, but encourages you to make up your own in an open-ended manner too. Needless to say, that's got me really excited at 5e now.

D&D 5E (2014) So why are you buying 5th edition?

Tt's new and shiny. I like new and shiny.

    People have the strangest deal-breakers

Oh - I'm not saying there should be no online support. I'm just saying that they shouldn't try to tie you into it to get a complete game. Any online stuff should be an optional extra, not a necessary part of the game. I don't play subscription based MMOs either. I may be a cheapskate but at...

    People have the strangest deal-breakers

For me, the biggest dealbreaker would be if it tries to tie me in to a supplement train or - worse - a DDI-style online subscription. I want to be able to buy the three core books and have a complete and playable game. From what we've heard so far I'm reasonably confident.

D&D 5E (2014) Drop the rotating spotlight model of niche protection for 5e

I'm all for classes being archetypes, but I'd give the Warlord a free pass. Of all the new 3.x/4e classes it's the one that seems most archetypal (in a shouty-sergeant type of way)

    DDXP Begins Today!

Not a hope, I'm afraid. Even zooming in and fiddling with the contrast, each line of text is only a pixel or two high given the resolution of the image (which was taken on an iPad rather than with a proper camera).

Level of Play part 2 (21st+)

My edition of choice is BECMI, and we normally play until we hit Immortality, and then stop there, with the characters being granted Immortality forming the end of the campaign. When we've played 3.x we've normally stopped around 15th to 19th level whenever the campaign comes to a natural halt...

D&D 5E (2014) Which of these settings do you want to see for D&D Next?

I went for the "A new setting" option. Time and again we've seen WotC update a setting to use the latest edition, and seen fans complain and whine that they've ruined it forever. Even today you can see posts on various message boards from people saying they didn't move to Edition X because...
