    D&D 5E (2014) Item-tracking system

I quite like the idea of once or twice having the players lose a lot of their camping equipment (tent, raincatcher, bedrolls etc) in a heavy, brutal flood. Just to put them in a precarious situation and force them to gather new supplies. That's why I want at least some kind of system for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Item-tracking system

Hi, I've finished my first session of ToA and I'm preparing Port Nyanzaru and the rest of Chult now. Since there's such a great focus on navigation, foraging, water consumption and general preparedness, I'd really like to introduce a more sophisticated inventory system instead of just...

    D&D 5E (2014) Reorganized Exhaustion Chart?

That's interesting. I'd probably keep Speed = 0 as the fifth option just before death (especially in ToA where travel is so important), but I do like this idea. Might slow down the game a bit if they get to choose though, and in ToA there's a lot of Exhaustion. I actually have my first ToA...

    D&D 5E (2014) Initiative - group or individual?

Yeah, have the GM roll tons of dice and keep track of even more stuff just so you get the chance to fireball a lot of enemies. Lazy players...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help With Disruptive Players(?)

I want to punch all your players in the face.

D&D 5E (2014) So, how hard is it to kill PCs anyway?

This is always difficult I find. If I focus fire a downed target while other PCs are alive and fighting, I might seem like a rude DM who just wants to murder. Typically I have monsters change targets once a character is down (unless he's isolated), but it does mean that PCs have an easy time...

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation experiences and advice thread

Hi! I recently set out to organize a weekly D&D campaign and the group assembled much quicker than I anticipated. I'm prepping Tomb of Annihilation, and would love some feedback. I'll be using the Celler of Death from DMsguild as the intro adventure, but beyond that I'm just looking for...

    D&D 5E (2014) My Job is a bad D&D adventure

Variant Gibbering Mouther: stuns and disorients you with relentless tales of her cats, uninteresting weekend plans and failed diets. While in close proximity to the Variant Gibbering Mouther, your Intelligence drops by 1d8+1 and your movement speed is reduced to 0. Weaknesses include (free)...

D&D 5E (2014) Matt Click joins the D&D team as a freelance editor!

Don't you see how stupid this sounds? The whole reason some people attacked the other new employee was because of a perceived lack of experience. This person doesn't lack experience and is therefore not subject to the same attacks.

    It's a Drizzt! "Timeless" - New Drizzt Do'Urden Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore

You haven't really moved up the literary ladder, haha! B-)

    D&D 5E (2014) Should a D&D 5e DM read the DMG and PHB?

I always wonder why players are happy to spend months, literally months, in terrible games instead of just DM'ing themselves. People are so lazy. I can't believe all his faults were so obvious to you, but you never considered taking over and running a good game.

    D&D 5E (2014) Your very first TPK?

Hi, DM's, what brought about your first total party kill? Players, what lead to your first TPK? I am asking because I DM'ed a one-shot this Saturday and I had my first TPK. I've only DM'ed for about a year, and I have killed one character in a one-shot and had several unconscious ones in my...

D&D 5E (2014) Running Tomb of Annihilation for a party of characters who have all been resurrected

Sounds underwhelming to me. Permanently losing hit points really stresses the sense of urgency and danger both on a story and mechanics level. Hit dice are mechanically important and work well, but narratively really boring.

Encounters per day. See how many RP/exploration/combat encounters there actually are per average day.

    D&D 5E (2014) Advice on lunch-hour games

Seconded. D&D is just a slow game; I most often can't be bothered to play unless the session is at least 4 hours. Running a dungeon is a great idea. There's lots of dungeons out there of any size, and they don't have to be combat-only. "Tales from the Yawning Portal" might be a cool place to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Old School Initiative

Can you elaborate please? The method I currently use is: I write numbers 20 to 1 on an A4 paper, and then have players announce their number, which I then write down. I add the monsters (same monsters are on same initiative). This takes a few moments, but once all the numbers are marked down...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs of EN World: How do YOU assign HP to monsters?

I use average from the MM. I actually hadn't realized some people roll! I'm still fairly new to DM'ing. I can see the advantages; I've had fights where PCs fought a large'ish group of monsters, and they eventually figure out how much damage they have to deal. I don't like when players learn that...
