    D&D 5E (2014) Running Eberron in 5E

Well, I don't know if I would describe wizards as artists. If artificers are engineers and mathematicians, then wizards are scientists using the tools and formulas developed by the engineers and mathematicians. Wizards care more about applied magic and artificers care more about magic theory.

    D&D 5E (2014) I have the DMG!

My book should arrive tomorrow, but can anyone tell me if there's a way to have more varied degrees of skill proficiency, sort of like skill points?

    D&D 5E (2014) Running Eberron in 5E

Yes, I agree. None of the existing classes have so much of their focus on casting spells into items rather than casting spells into people. And barely any classes ever grant features that have you craft something. An artificer subclass with the right feel and flavor would require too many...

D&D 5E (2014) Behind the design of 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons: Well my impression as least.

This isn't anything more than my own preference, but I personally don't want the class lines between the core classes to blur. If all the classes had a mechanic similar to spellcasting, then choosing a class with that mechanic would feel less meaningful. I had a fun time playing 4th edition but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Knowlage checks

Yeah. Makes sense. If you know stuff about magic and the things it can do, you might know about creatures that it is used to create.

D&D 5E (2014) Legendary monsters are not solo monsters

Oh! I thought of something! What if activating Legendary Resistance lets a monster take a Legendary Action, or maybe just a regular action, right before the effects of the thing it's responding to occurs? A sort of reverse-reaction. The idea is it uses the action to attempt to block or avoid the...

Mearls announces end of Legends & Lore & New D&D Columns in 2015!

About the need for a gaming magazine, does anyone know anything about Gygax Magazine? All I really know is it has Order of the Stick comics in it (continuing the Dragon Magazine continuity) and it's sort of like Dragon. I know you guys said Dungeon, but maybe Gygax Magazine has some of the...

    Gygax Memorial Statue Concept Proposal

Yeah, I don't know. This is kind of cluttered, visually. You try to take in the scene as a whole, and you see... a castle tower with a gigantic disembodied head perched on top.

D&D 5E (2014) A running list of questions from a new player/new DM. Other n00bs please feel free to add in.

A properly-bookmarked PDF of the rules can be a magical thing to have, especially for things like looking up spell descriptions quickly. The Basic Rules PDF does not have bookmarks that go into this level of detail, though. With only one bookmark for each chapter it's pretty hard to check back...

    Great product support from WoTC

Aww, that sucks. I guess you could cut out the signed part and paste it into a new copy? Unless they signed the inside cover or something. Who signed it? Do you think it's possible to get him/her to sign it again somehow? That defective print run they had was really inconvenient for everyone...

D&D 5E (2014) Legendary monsters are not solo monsters

I see Legendary Resistance as more of a DM tool to make the fights more intense. Really devastating magic that is powerful enough to make most problems go away will not make a legendary creature go away. But casters who make clever use of less scary spells will be able to sneak in their damage...

D&D 5E (2014) The DMG: Has it lived up to the hype?

Isn't "advice on making your own house rules" sort of the whole book, though? The variants and optional rules are pre-made house rules. The things about making your own race, class, spell, monster, etc. are each advice about making specific kinds of houserules. There's not much general advice...

    Great product support from WoTC

That's cool! My book fell apart too, and I got a $5 coupon code for DnDClassics.com. I used it to get this neat 2e Ravenloft thingy about a supernatural carnival. It was mostly lore, so I should be able to convert it to 5e fairly painlessly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fantasy Styles

Sure, but now we've created terminology we can use to give someone a quick, general idea of what a particular setting or campaign is like. You can say stuff like, "so this one is sort of a dark fantasy mixed with intrigue in a wuxia-themed setting. Wanna join in?"

D&D 5E (2014) The DMG: Has it lived up to the hype?

I don't have the DMG, but based on what I saw when I skimmed one in a bookstore more than half the things on the list I was able to find in it. So it included at the very least 10.5 out of the 17 list items. Maybe someone who has the book can find more that I missed? Include tactical combat...

D&D 5E (2014) Behind the design of 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons: Well my impression as least.

Y'know, a party of three rogues, each one a different archetype, sounds pretty fun. You could plan tactics based around strategies that rely on everyone being good at stealth and subterfuge that a more diverse party couldn't pull off. But everyone could still take on different roles in the plan...

    D&D 5E (2014) Mark -- I don't get it

If you run in, attack, and run back in the same turn, your opponent won't get the chance to mark you, I guess. So it adds a grey area in between "completely engaged in melee" and "attacking from a distance" where OA's are less of a risk with hit-and-run tactics. I don't have the book, though...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running Eberron in 5E

Well, I can't give you many suggestions without testing this out in full, but I can comment on the ability to craft homunculi. I actually convinced my D&D Encounters DM to let my wizard make himself a homunculus at 2nd level, given that A) he was a transmuter, B) he had proficiency in...

D&D 5E (2014) With the Holy Trinity out, let's take stock of 5E

I wanted to look at the art in the book directly, but unfortunately I had to mail it back to be replaced. Incidentally, that is my biggest complaint about this edition so far. A book shouldn't lose all its pages within two months of its purchase. BUT! I was sneaky about this. I only mailed back...

    D&D 5E (2014) Weapons vs Cantrips

Well, clerics only have one cantrip that deals damage. I'm sure there are situations when sacred flame isn't as effective as a mace. There really should be more damaging cleric cantrips, though. There's something wrong with a class feature that slightly increases the damage of, at most, one...
