Yeah it’s the cumulative effect of corruption through use of sorcery, perhaps only when you don’t take the proper precautions like blood sacrifice. The effect could take many forms, maybe premature aging etc

Ah yes. Also something easily ruled on by the GM if killing punches aren’t appropriate to the encounter, and the pc thinks otherwise....and still allows for Conan to have the potential to punch a horse out :)

Thanks, sounds good. I need to thoroughly read those.

I feel an exception for unarmed attacks from medium and smaller sized opponents should be made. Instead of falling to zero hit points and death saves, fall to zero hit-points but stable. This then does a good job of modelling the knock out punch.

Regarding Magic I do feel HP sacrifice, whether self, someone else, or both should be part of the magic system. A system where hp’s can power spells, and also help cure accrued corruption, is really appropriate for Xoth. CapnZapp magic suggestions feel very appropriate.

I really like that. It makes combat more exciting and dangerous. It’s simple and elegantly done. Immediately changes the tone and atmosphere of the game. Also it will interact with the Assassin abilities very nicely, particularly when they have an auto crit. Yep, that does it for me. Congrats...

Riffing off of the TA wound Tracker, and Exhaustion tracker, you could develop a new one specifically for the cumulative consequences of using Sorcery.

That’s the orginal bespoke Trudvang Chronicles example you have there. The 5e version (currently in beta) looks like this, I’ve taken this from the freely available sample adventure WurmsTongue, which was on their website, but may have been removed now? Once again I’m not advocating using...

Whilst the (optional) wound tracker is a departure from standard 5e, it’s done in a way that slots into the existing rules with very little extra adjustment. It’s effectively a new condition, working in the same cumulative way exhaustion does. But Importantly the levelling and Hit-point...

Yes that’s certainly one way to approach it. My only criticism of that is that it may go against the expectations of many 5e players that this is aimed at. 5e players are very used to the level progression structure of the game. Structural change like that might make them feel they’re not...

Yes, good points. Allowing the use of inspiration to achieve a special result on a critical seems a good fit for this. No extra rolling, and very player /hero facing. Though I’ve no objection to making an extra roll, for the sake of evening out the probability. The rolling evens on damage 50%...

Yes both good points. I still feel there’s an element of danger missing from standard 5e play though. As it stands it models high heroics in high fantasy well. The lower levels still have a slight edge which I like, but higher levels tend to become quite bland for my taste as the risk becomes...

The critical effects from the system shock table are mostly short term hindrances, with one result being fall to zero-hit points and death saves. There are no lasting wounds there, which is why I thought it appropriate. With my first suggestion was using the limited resource of Inspiration to...

I guess it depends on how you imagine the attack. A knife to a critically vulnerable area can be deadly, as can an axe blow to the head. One may look more spectacular though. For me it remains a simple way to implement an exceptional critical, without disrupting the familar 5e game too much...

You have your own strong opinion on this, but I disagree. I think it is appropriate to the genre, but it’s not my game to design. Contrast to my suggested variant (above). It is borne out of the realization the exact numbers don't matter! Yes exactly what I’ve presented from my first post. I...

To an extent I agree. Yes, this is what my post was largely concerning. 5e has an existing optional rule that does this already. It’s the massive damage/system shock rule in the DMG. My feeling is though that the trigger for that rule (sustaining damage equal to half hp Max from one source)...

If you wanted to give some heroic scaling options to a death save/Con save you could add the proficiency bonus to the save roll . It remains dangerous, but models the hero’s improved chances of surviving. As well as inspired critical's, inspiration could also be allowed to pass a con save where...
