    D&D 5E (2014) Slow Dragonshields?

AC 15. I hardly think leather armour and a shield is deserving of a slower speed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Slow Dragonshields?

I was designing a kobold lair for my campaign when I noticed that Kobold Dragonshields have a speed of 20 ft., while every other kobold in Volo's or the MM have a speed of 30 ft. Is this a typo, or is there some obvious and logical reason for the slower speed that I am missing? I am happy to...

D&D 5E (2014) How do players know they are in the "wrong" location in a sandbox campaign?

A problem often arises in trying to telegraph difficulty to players in game. A great example of this is... HOARD OF THE DRAGON QUEEN SPOILERS: In HotDQ your 1st level, newly rolled up PCs come to a town being ravaged by an ADULT blue dragon. The PCs are expected to rush to the defense of the...

D&D 5E (2014) After Tyranny of Dragons (OR: What to do with 15+ level PCs?)

Not only are there a few high level adventures in DMs Guild, but Dungeon Magazine had a bunch that can be converted from 3e.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Class Design Criticism

Old School D&D was that you played a single campaign for years and years. I am running an ongoing campaign that has been playing regularly since 1st edition (with some of those PCs still around). This type of play needs all 20 levels present in the game and it needs the abilities to be spread...

D&D 5E (2014) Am I missing something about Conjure Animal

A few points: In 3rd edition, a moderate level druid could fill the battlefield with far more chaff than it can in 5e. And with no concentration required. This is just to point out that it got a lot better in 5e as compared to 3.5. It is tough to judge overpowerdness at 5th level, which is one...

    D&D 5E (2014) TftYP - Against the Giants

Try fighting with a sword in that 3 foot wide hallway...while wearing armour and a backpack. Squeezing doesn't mean you are literally squeezing. It just means you cannot operate at full capacity. Put on the armour and a backpack and try to run at full speed down that 3 foot wide hallway...

D&D 5E (2014) do you still roll for damage?

The 9% critical chance affects the overall odds by only 1% or so. For example, if I have a 20% chance to hit you and, if I hit, the chance of a critical is only 9%, then the net affect of the critical chance is 20% x 9% = 1.8%.

D&D 5E (2014) do you still roll for damage?

Averages are equivalent over the course of many damage rolls. They are not even close to so over, say, 3-6 damage rolls typical in many fights. I understand perfectly that there are other items of uncertainty that enter into the equation. Nevertheless, the fact that non critical damage has no...

D&D 5E (2014) do you still roll for damage?

The problem is that it allows the PCs to know with certainty that they can take X more hits from a creature before reaching 0 hit points. I don't like that certainty.

    D&D 5E (2014) Summon Monster: 5th Edition

And aside from fiends, it is available in 5e. Most every other type that should logically be summonable is. The real problem is that there are not enough creatures available yet to fill up the options for these spells (for example, try to find an elemental that is more than CR 1/2 and not over...

    D&D 5E (2014) Summon Monster: 5th Edition

Let me ask the original poster this. You say you have been missing the summon monster spell. Why? What do you miss about it? If the answer is you miss how it dominates the battle and let you kick butt over everything, that's one thing. If the answer is you miss some specific role or the like...

Unearthed Arcana 5E Psionics Alert! The Mystic Is Back In Unearthed Arcana

Then define enemy. OK, so dunk the rats in water so that they are irritated. Then kill them. The point is, enemy is a fairly ill-defined term. While I understand the 5e vibe of short rules and let the DM fill in the blanks, the bag of rats syndrome has been around long enough that WOTC should...

Unearthed Arcana 5E Psionics Alert! The Mystic Is Back In Unearthed Arcana

Am I reading the soul knife 6th level ability wrong, or does soul knife + bag of rats = infinite psi points?

D&D 5E (2014) What new classes do you think we need?

I think we desperately need a class that can front line fight, but still be a skill monkey, and cast decent arcane blaster spells, and heal very well, and shapechange a few times per day, and charm people he speaks with, and has a cool mount that sprouts wings and breathes dragon breath. Can we...

    D&D 5E (2014) Attacking a square or a point of place?

I have seen AC 5. Objects often, in 5e, have higher AC to reflect what was hardness in 3e. But just hitting a 5 foot square should be AC 5.

    D&D 5E (2014) Shove attack OP?

I ran the Hoard of the Dragon Queen with a Shield Mastery dragonborn paladin and I didn't find it at all onerous. Did he use it a lot? Yeah....but so what? It often didn't work and when it did, it usually let him have advantage on his attacks but not much else, since standing from prone no...

    D&D 5E (2014) druid wild shape question

I rule they are squeezing. Otherwise, this is effectively a free 4 square shove that can push enemies into hazards....not the intention. The onus should be on the wild shaper to have sufficient room. And given that an actual large creature does NOT physically take up a 2 x2 space area, that is...

D&D 5E (2014) Spells cast at higher level spell slots. Worth it?

When an encounter is going wrong and you need to shut it down now, upcasting damage spells is useful. But usually, you are better off not upcasting damage spells.
