    D&D 5E (2014) Was I in the wrong?

A player on the phone when a DM is running a session is HIGHLY rude. It is one of many examples where players have no idea how hard it is to DM and give it no respect. The game is there for EVERYONE at the table to have fun, including the DM. DMing when someone isn't paying attention to you is...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D's XP & advancement system is a bit broken. I have a solution.

Yep. For those not in the know, Runequest is a completely classless system, abiding solely by skills. Everytime you use a skill in a stressful situation you get a check mark for that skill. When you have a chance to rest and reflect you have a chance to go up in that skill (chance diminishes as...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Rogue in 5e

I am not seeing this in our games. Cunning Action is one of the best abilities in the game and it pretty much gets the rogue out of most dangerous situations. Our rogues in the game I DM and the one I play in almost never get scratched because they are always moving into combat, attacking, and...

Not using Grid / minis / pawns

Not sure how they are extra work. If need be, don't draw out terrain or the dungeon on the grid. But if you don't even use it for relative positioning, then you are really losing out on a large facet of the game and, more importantly, turning combat into a static dice rolling fest. I find when...

    D&D 5E (2014) Medicine Skill usefulness?

I think the skill can be quite useful in some circumstances. While the non-proficient skill check might seem to be easy, a DC 10 when your life is on the line can make you want every plus to the check possible. So a +2 or +4 to the proficiency can matter. The biggest thwart to the usefulness...

    D&D 5E (2014) Battlerager Barbarian Question

First, I am curious if you allowed such inanity in 3.5e? Does a bag of holding wrapped around some rocks overcome DR 15/magic? Second, I believe with regard to 5e you are hanging your hat on the choice of WOTC to word damage resistance as half damage from nonmagical weapons as opposed to saying...

Not using Grid / minis / pawns

I despise not playing with a grid. And I grew up in TOTM D&D back in the day. But the fact is that positioning still matters in 5e (less so than in 3e or 4e) and inevitably the vision the DM has in his head of the combat is not the same as the players (and, indeed, varies from player to player)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why 19 not 20?

I can only guess it is so that characters that actually invest to get their stats to 20 aren't upstaged entirely by someone who gets an item. In other words, to reward the investment needed to get to 20. I have no special knowledge of this fact, but seems logical to me.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Psionics and Mystics Take Two

A poster asked why Immortals don't get multiple attacks per round. Simple answer: Lethal Strike. They basically do all their damage in one big strike per turn. Another benefit of the Mystic is that many of the effects require Intelligence saves. This is good, IMO, since Int saves have been the...

D&D 5E (2014) How does the Monk perform? (and revisiting monk spells)

First, why wouldn't a monk want to use attunement slots on AC items? Second, spells can be cast on monks as well, can't they? Yes, a fighter in plate with shield who chooses defensive fighting style will have an AC over 20. You found someone who could go all out to specialize in AC and barely...

D&D 5E (2014) How does the Monk perform? (and revisiting monk spells)

I agree, but I was even conceding the point of the OP, since he was saying a 20 isn't that good!

D&D 5E (2014) How does the Monk perform? (and revisiting monk spells)

Do you know of a lot of 6th level barbarians with 20s in both Dex and Con (and not Str)? I hope not.

D&D 5E (2014) How does the Monk perform? (and revisiting monk spells)

20 AC by 6th level is not great? Um....really? Seems pretty great to me. Better AC than a barbarian or rogue. Comparable to a fighter (plate plus shield). Better than bards, rangers, et al. Please explain other than by magic items or by multiclassing gyrations how you manage an AC over 20 by...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Pacing Guide

In playing D&D for over 40 years, I have yet to find a DM who can run extemporaneously and make it feel completely natural. Too many things go too well. Fights are all precisely the right toughness and the PCs always just pull it off in the end. Help always comes when you need it. Things never...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Pacing Guide

This is because you are comfortable with and enjoy the freestyle approach to gaming wherein the PCs can go off the rails in any way possible and the DM makes things up as he goes along. This is a legitimate style of play that allows the players a sandbox to play in, but IMO also leads to a world...

Is TOMB OF HORRORS the Worst Adventure Of All Time?

I find John's complaints to be ill-considered. Almost every trap in the dungeon can be defeated with a 10 ft pole. Especially the ever-cited dragon mouth. A simple 1 copper piece pole for goshsakes! If you are going into a death trap dungeon (and Wick told his players they were) and don't prod...

Then you must have loved the 3e spell Defenestrating Sphere!

    What 5e got wrong

Hostile much? I find there is nothing more satisfying than playing the same PC for years. I have campaigns that have gone for over 10 years. My current 3.5 one is due to wrap up this year and will have been 9 years long. This idea that you rip through a campaign in 3-6 months is not only, IMO...

    D&D 5E (2014) Shapeshifting dragons - only metallic?

I find this to be discriminating against dragons of colour. We must stand together to stop this injustice! All dragons, regardless of colour or creed, deserve equal access to changing shape. No polymorph....no peace!

D&D 5E (2014) Just played one of my D&D board games and there's one thing I think could greatly benefit the current edition (or any really)

Well, while I think this was useful when they did this for some of the more complicated monsters in 3e, I just don't see 5e creatures having that many options in combat to merit this. In other words, a waste of space if included in the actual Monster Manuals.
