    Too much prose in RPGs?

Freelance writers get paid by the word, so until that changes (which I don't see happening) RPG publishers will continue to release excessively verbose books. The exceptions I have seen is with the smaller publishers who are usually also the writers. An example is Gavin Norman of Necrotic Gnome...

    Renaming Fantasy Shamans/Shamanism (+)

Mythras again, goes further. Animism uses two skills, Trance and Binding. Trance is used to travel to and navigate the spirit world. More specifically if the animist is trying to find a particular kind of spirit, the Trance skill can also be used to help with the search. Trance may also be used...

    Renaming Fantasy Shamans/Shamanism (+)

Mythras uses "Animism" to describe the system of belief and "Animist" to describe the practitioner. From my reading it is broad enough to include all related practices across the world and history, without mis-understanding, mis-labelling or appropriating from any specific culture or practice.

Media Opposed Roles podcast - 3 episode release

We have just published 3 interviews for the Opposed Roles podcast. The podcast is focused on the Mythras RPG but should be of interest to anyone who plays BRP-style and games with a historical interest. Kristin's Sami-Norse campaign: (Animism part 2) This is an interview with Kristin about...

Gamemastering advice on preparing adventures for Sword & Sorcery campaigns

Stop pitching or trying to sell anything, most people do not know what they want and so cannot respond to what you are talking about, especially with high level concepts. Run a one-shot with pregens using an adventure designed to provide the experience you have in mind. You need a tiny bit of...

Discussing Sword & Sorcery and RPGs

It's not as if there is a shortage of RPGs outside of d&d that are suitable for Sword & Sorcery style games. Skill-based without levels, which describes most RPGs in fact.

Discussing Sword & Sorcery and RPGs

The "loner" motif seems like it would be a problem, but @Dioltach suggestion that it is the "outsider" quality of the protagonists that applies to a group as much as a loner. Companions who almost always die or leave, or we simply never see again. In the Arnie films, one companion dies, one...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can 5e Be Mythic?

Yes, it is a bit hidden on the website, but the core of what has been released so far is in the "Wormskin" zine - https://necroticgnome.com/collections/settings/products/wormskin-zine There probably is enough for a campaign, but if you want something more substantial, it might make sense to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Can 5e Be Mythic?

Dolmenwood does folklore d&d but not "epic mythic" https://necroticgnome.com/products/welcome-to-dolmenwood The Winter's Daughter scenario is for both OSE and d&d5. I've run a bit of Dolmenwood, but using non-d&d rules entirely.

Discussing Sword & Sorcery and RPGs

Phllip Emery writes about the motifs of sword & sorcery, instead of plot elements. This is a better and more useful way of thinking about the genre. Sword-&-sorcery is intense. All else is subjugated to this effect Sword-&-sorcery is potentially amoral Sword-&-sorcery is the combination of...

I do not play d&d, there are many other games with better and more interesting combat mechanics, it is a very low bar to beat. A fundamental problem that I can see in what you are trying to do is, for you: rolling dice to resolve something results in adding to an abstraction, (eg. "momentum")...

Help Wanted - Fans of Combat Mechanics

Look up the Ubiquity RPG, it uses what you are trying to figure out - a die pool system based on success/failure, or d2 dice. You can use any dice and just count the odds or evens. You can get Ubiquity dice which reduce the number of dice you actually need to throw. Runeslinger has a number of...

What are the skills? How are skills measured? What is a success? How do skills influence success? How does Al win the exchange? What is momentum? How is it measured? How does it affect skills or a skill contest? If Al engages first, why does he attack again immediately afterwards? what...

Gamemastering advice on preparing adventures for Sword & Sorcery campaigns

You are doing the same thing as you did six years ago: https://www.enworld.org/threads/planning-sword-sorcery-campaigns.353756/ Ask for recommendations, then reject them and then write out your own hooks. I am not sure if you are trolling or have amnesia. Why not follow your own advice from...
