D&D 5E (2014) Too Much Spellcasting in Your D&D? Just Add a Little Lankhmar!

I understand why people who like to play casters (in the interest of full disclosure, I prefer playing martials) want to be able to do something "magic-y" every round but cantrips are the thing I dislike most in 5E because, to me, magic is supposed to be a rare and finite resource. Spammable...

D&D 5E (2014) Too Much Spellcasting in Your D&D? Just Add a Little Lankhmar!

For 5E, this is actually untrue. In old-school D&D, Magic-users (what we called Wizards back in the day) were indeed pathetic in combat when they weren't casting spells. In modern day D&D, however, a Wizard (if "built" in a certain way) is really only slightly less effective using weapons than...

D&D 5E (2014) Too Much Spellcasting in Your D&D? Just Add a Little Lankhmar!

I only have one thing to say to this topic: Snarf Zagyg, you are my hero!:D

    Rank your Treks!

I don't say this to be dismissive of your fondness for this individual but I have no interest in some random dudes opinions on....anything. I form my own opinions about things without regard to what someone else thinks. Again, please understand I am not stating this as a judgement of your...

    Rank your Treks!

I have figured out why I like Voyager and most people in this thread dislike it: Voyager is like old-school DnD. The emphasis was on the current adventure not on long running story arcs or character development. Most people here consider those bugs while I consider those features (or at least...

The Greatest TV Shows of All Time Part 2: HA HA! Comedy Illustrated

    1. Seinfeld (any list which does not have this show at the top is incorrect!) 2. The Office (U.S. version) 3. Veep 4. The Larry Sanders Show 5. Curb Your Enthusiasm I refuse to play by the rules (CN???) and will only list five shows. Edit: Oh, Snarf, a valiant effort but if you are going to...

    Rank your Treks!

Thanks for that summation. That actually sounds really cool and definitely inspires me to give the show another look. For all the talk of non-interference and the Prime Directive that pervades many Star Trek shows, it sure seems like the Federation can be a lot like "Galaxy Police: making your...

    Rank your Treks!

I'm noticing a LOT of fandom for DS9. I only watched about half of the first season and gave up on it. I guess I might have to give it another go. It always seemed a little odd to have a show called "Star TREK" on an immovable space station.

    Rank your Treks!

Television 1. Voyager 2. Next Generation 3. The Original Series (The above are the only series I have watched in their entirety) 4. Enterprise 5. Deep Space 9 6. Discovery (I've watched at least some of the next three series but did not watch all of the episodes, I honestly did not care for...

Finally saw Tenet (and Nolan films ranked)

The Prestige is the only movie I have ever immediately re-watched after the credits rolled. For me, it had the same "Whoa!" moment that the Matrix provided when you find out...well, you know...but since the Matrix had its big reveal in the middle of the movie I had already processed the idea...

D&D 5E (2014) Adjusting to 1 encounter per Day: Putting the XP Budget into a single fight

I did not bother to set the circumstances of the scenario but I was thinking in terms of 200 guards against 4 adventurers wherein the parties are already engaged in close combat. My fault for not making that clear. Edit: Even if the guards were at range, if a DM were to play them with even a...

D&D 5E (2014) Adjusting to 1 encounter per Day: Putting the XP Budget into a single fight

This is true (about 5E) and it has always bothered me in every edition. Edit: thinking about this more deeply, I am not sure I agree with the notion that four 7th level characters could wade through "thousands of low level foes". I did not play 3rd or 4th edition, so I can't speak to those...

D&D 5E (2014) Adjusting to 1 encounter per Day: Putting the XP Budget into a single fight

The notion that 200 average guards isn't automatically a TPK for four adventurers of any level makes me sad. :( I know DnD is a fantasy game, but I still prefer it to give at least a perfunctory nod to realism.

Finally saw Tenet (and Nolan films ranked)

I've only seen eight of the eleven films listed by Snarf and here are the correct rankings: 1) The Prestige 5 stars 2) The Dark Knight 5 stars 3) Memento 4.5 stars 4) Batman Begins 4.5 stars (note: there is a biiiiiig gap between #4 and the remaining titles in the list) 5) The Dark Knight...

D&D General Mechanical differences between AD&D and Basic?

Fair enough. I have no idea what B10 is as I only played B1-B4, btw. I don't care much for Temple of Elemental Evil, myself, but most lists of "Greatest Hits" D&D adventures that I have come across are largely composed of AD&D (1E) modules with a few Basic/Expert sprinkled in.

D&D General What Product Do You Wish They Sold For D&D

I tried 5e and then stopped because magic is rampant in the system. Therefore, I would love to see a "low magic" splat book released which provides guidance on how to reconfigure the game to strip away much of the magic in the game but maintain balance between the classes (a futile endeavor I'm...

D&D General On Skilled Play: D&D as a Game

I am a big fan of the "old school" style of D&D but I definitely do not enjoy tapping every bit of the dungeon with a 10' pole. Nor do I enjoy the style that Jim Ward was describing wherein players are terrified of everything that the DM might throw at them. As I stated in another thread, for...

OSR Is there room in modern gaming for the OSR to bring in new gamers?

This paragraph, particularly the part I bolded, so clearly states exactly why I love old-school gaming. For me, the game will always be about the adventure, not my character. My favorite adventure of all time is the oft derided "funhouse dungeon", White Plume Mountain, precisely because of its...

    Adventure gamers wanted.

Just wanted to respond that I would LOVE to game at your table (particularly to play 1E); unfortunately, I live in central Ohio so that is a no go. I wish you every success in finding like-minded gamers for your table.
