    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

    I should know better.

    That’s what publishers do!

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

I was just poking fun (good-naturedly I hope) at other debates about free speech and artistic expression. I agree with you.

    (y) Let’s not forget that if WotC were to publish a true-to-the-original DS, they would necessarily be curtailing the free expression of their writers and artists by prohibiting them from reimagining the setting. :)

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

Dwarves in togas, actually. :). But I was talking about fantasy RPGs, not historically accurate ones. I don’t think exploring how I might model a Rome-like dwarven empire without slavery is appropriate for this thread. Another time, perhaps. It doesn’t change everything. It doesn’t change the...

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

It isn’t considered studying history. You missed the context of the comments about learning history. Someone posted that learning history will sometimes make you comfortable. That doesn’t mean that playing games must also do so.

What We Lose When We Eliminate Controversial Content

D&D-like games set in an historically accurate 16th century are rare to non-existant. People might think of D&D as set in the past because of the assumed technology level, but we don't have to assume that history and social and family structures mirror our world at the time. In D&D fantasy...

D&D General Which Enworlders do you want to game with?

I’d enjoy gaming with almost anyone here, so long as we don’t reveal our ENWorld user names and remember how much we annoyed each other online.

I hope people read this over and over again.

    D&D 5E (2024) Pulse check on 1D&D excitement level

I don't have it in me as a DM to review, learn, teach, and play a new ruleset. I have barely glanced at the playtest materials. My excitement level is very very low, but not because I don't like the changes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

We have plenty of very common historical and present day real-world evils that are barely touched on in D&D gaming materials. Being common in the real world is not IMO a compelling argument to include them in a fantasy world.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

Did TSR do more than just change the names of the devils and demons as a response to the panicked detractors? I mostly played 1e and started using 2e in about ‘94 but I only used the PHB, so I’m not up on all the design changes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Good modules (not APs)

I’m following for recommendations. I’ve waded through a lot of stuff on DMs Guild and AL without finding any gems.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

Yes, it has. It doesn’t always have to be that way.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

I’ve seen people suggest individuals add stuff at their own tables rather than demand or expect it to be included in published materials. Doesn’t sound like can’t or shouldn’t to me. 🤷‍♂️ The writer implies. The reader infers. Perhaps you and I are just making different inferences.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dark Sun, problematic content, and 5E…

It’s very possible I missed something. It’s a long, convoluted thread. Is anyone saying they can’t or shouldn’t?
