What are you reading in 2024?

I'm two-thirds through Ivanhoe, an old favorite of mine. I'm sure I haven't read it in more than 20 years, but for me it holds up. The antisemitism is appalling, but I do love the story and the telling of it. The style I'm sure is not to everyone's taste. I think Sir Walter Scott was paid by the...

"Oddities" in fantasy settings - the case against "consistency"

I’m not sure how to read this. Would you as a player ask the DM for an in-game explanation, or would your character try in-game to discover the explanation? Would you accept that your character might not have the means to figure it out?

    Just saw Delicious in Dungeon

I'm going to wait several weeks and check in again. I found the first episode charming and novel, but I couldn't get half-way through the second. Following some comments here, I jumped ahead to #4, but it's not working for me. I want to like this show.

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

The dragon problem, if it is a problem, seems to me to be more about 5Es anemic monster design than it is about bounded accuracy.

Recurring silly comment about Apocalypse World and similar RPGs

After reading all most some of this thread, I’m convinced I won’t really grasp the system until I see it in play. The last actual-play videos I tried to watch (maybe a year ago?) bored me into a stupor. Any recommendations of lively, engaging AW videos, preferably not three hours long?

    Greatest Fantasy Warriors?

I nominate Tomoe Gozen, as depicted in Jessica Amanda Salmonson's fantasy fiction (although the historical person is worth reading about also).

What are you reading in 2024?

The series editor is John Joseph Adams. He selects 80 contenders and passes them on to a different guest editor each year to narrow it down to the best 20. This year the guest editor is R.F. Kuang, whose work I don’t know.

What are you reading in 2024?

I finished up the Iliad last week and I’m now reading a collection, the Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy 2023 (stories published in 2022). It’s a spectacular series that started in 2015. Every volume has a few stories that knock my socks off.

Games I own that I'll never play (again)

Here's what's on my shelf. There are probably more in the basement or attic. Ars Magica 4th Edition - never played Call of Cthulhu 4th Edition - played a few short scenarios Champions - played maybe five sessions, messed around a lot with character creation Noir - played once Adventures in...

What are you reading in 2024?

I'm starting off 2024 with Emily Wilson's new translation of the Iliad, which was a holiday gift to me. I'm about halfway through. I'm not a big fan of Homer, but this is the most lively and compelling translation I've come across.

D&D 5E (2024) Rogue's Been in an Awkward Place, And This Survey Might Be Our Last Chance to Let WotC Know.

I joined a parkour gym for awhile with my son when he was small. Speaking from experience, parkour requires strength, agaility, and constitution. If you try parkour in your early 40s like I did, it also requires a very low Wisdom score.

I want my actions to matter

The 5e skill system doesn’t prevent a character from being an expert climber. But it’s true that one can’t be an expert climber without also being an expert jumper and an expert swimmer.
