    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

And if we dislike that sage because he doesn't "do" it for us, didn't like how the sage was used in previous works, and feel like they are wasting our money devoting references to said disliked sage...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

The rules serve the DM and his notion of a campaign. There is no hard-wired rule that high level characters are elves or anything else. If someone wants to run a campaign where humans represent the pinnacle of awesomeness and no other PC race can rise above 8th level they can. Many players won't...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

So, you are suggesting that we invest in a setting that is routinely altered in such a heavy-handed way we are likely to have to A) ignore future support of the setting and go our own way or B) make massive alterations in our theoretically long-standing Forgotten Realms campaign in order to use...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

If I disagree with you I'm "willfully blind"? Let me explain my position about the burden of a player/dungeon master to run a given campaign setting. There is none. Obviously, if someone is turned off of Forgotten Realms because of the numerous powerful NPCs that are inserted into the narrative...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

It is their loss as far as I am concerned. I bought one of their adventure books. Not because it was compelling but because my son had indicated he wanted to run 5E and I wanted him to have an idea how to structure an adventure. Wasn't very impressed with the format they use for adventures...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

I don't see it that way. Golarion comes across as an intentional attempt to create a setting that functions abstractly much like the Forgotten Realms with a few tweaks. As far as multiple settings, gamers, last I heard, are in shorter supply than they were back then. I think there are too many...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

But your reasons aren't compelling to people who are actually answering the OP so why bring them up? I could use any setting and ignore some of the material. Anecdotal statements about never encountering the FRealms trivia master who wants to talk it up during the game don't matter to someone...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

I'll try to get back to you on this. As you can imagine, I haven't bothered looking at those modules for many years. What I remember was Elminster came up quite a bit in the modules I purchased and was used more heavy-handedly than I would have ever used my world's "Gandalf".

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

I think you made your point a few posts before.

Your tone and words are impolite.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

Some of the modules I've stared at would lead many to feel the PCs were overshadowed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

The Oerth Journals are some other DM's homebrew stuff. In this case, ignoring stuff does apply. I looked at the Oerth Journals a long time ago and quickly decided they weren't much value to me.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

Again, the topic of the thread was why many "hate" the Forgotten Realms. It was not anything else. Your advice is a bit off topic. I don't really think anyone here thought this thread would change the D&D marketing approach.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

If you are stuck with The Adventure Begins and the LGGaz I suppose I could see more of your point. I started with the Boxed Set and that is what I am referring to. It is far superior to any FRealms campaign setting book I've ever seen and it does do a good job of creating strong themes for play.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

    1. I think you misunderstand Greyhawk if you think it is "generic" in the same sense as FRealms. Greyhawk has a definite feel to it. There is an attempt to recreate an essentially medieval fantasy world. There is a short timeline and historical narrative that explains where the ethnic cultures...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

The topic is why FR is "hated". The topic wasn't why 'no one should like FR'. I think some DMs are also collectors. They may not want to play in a setting without having all or much of the material out there. For those DMs the approach of just using the basic Forgotten Realms sources and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

Did you run Hoard of the Dragon Queen? If so, did you remove the Cult of the Dragon and the Red Wizards of Thay out of it? Also, do you use old 2nd edition FR adventures? If so, did you take the Avatar plot out of the Avatar trilogy?

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

There is no need to run in the Forgotten Realms if you don't like abundant ultra-powerful NPCs in every region, ubiquitously powerful magic, etc. Pulling that out of the Forgotten Realms is more work than just building your own setting, assuming you wanted to use any adventures and supplements...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

I am absolutely sure of some of the reasons I dislike the setting and this thread has helped me identify another issue, its overuse by TSR/WOTC/Hasbro. I had high hopes with the original grey box until I read it more carefully. My interest in D&D is greatly fueled by my interest in folklore...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why FR Is "Hated"

My opinion is the Forgotten Realms had "more" source material rather than richer source material, much of it was fairly implausible (all the secret leaders of governments for example) or clumsy (failure to understand Von Thunen's Law for example) in execution. Maybe this was addressed in 3rd...
