    D&D 5E (2014) Roleplaying in D&D 5E: It’s How You Play the Game

I don't think OP is telling anybody how to play their own games. Heck, he wouldn't have that power even if he wanted to do so. You guys are overreacting a bit here.

D&D 5E (2014) Do PCs at your table have script immunity?

You are not respecting my request for disengagement if you keep talking about me. Also, nobody here is forcing anything on anyone. It's all a matter of opinions and point of view. Always.

D&D 5E (2014) Do PCs at your table have script immunity?

You can laugh and ridicule my position all you want, I stand my ground: Respecting people's opinion and trying to find common ground when conflict arises are very basic social skills A gaming rulebook IS NO PLACE to teach people about that. Now I'm going to disengage before the moderation...

D&D 5E (2014) Do PCs at your table have script immunity?

Did I say anything about novelty? In my opinion, it was offensive then and still offensive now. I don't need a random game designer telling me how I should behave as a human being.

It depends where you live, really.

Because giving a precise formula would have been too much like 4e. And we all know anything 4e is bad.

D&D 5E (2014) Using social skills on other PCs

That's for the DM to decide. I'm going to experiment with the completely diceless approach next year. No ability checks during exploration and social interaction.

D&D 5E (2014) Do PCs at your table have script immunity?

Not really. I've ran a pretty lengthy M&M campaign myself and death just isn't a thing in that game (damage is non-lethal by default). I'm just really amused how the "killer DM" has become a stigma in the D&D community as o late.

D&D 5E (2014) Using social skills on other PCs

I'm just letting you know that I share your preference for clearly stated actions and I honestly believe that if more DMs adopted it, the gaming experience at their tables would improve greatly. I spend enough time on Reddit to know that half of the problems people bring up there would never...

D&D 5E (2014) Using social skills on other PCs

No, it's well within RAW that the players must declare their actions as... actions instead of phrasing it as questions. The rules says clearly that a player should state what their character do and how they want to accomplish it. That's not the same as asking the DM a question. You are stepping...

D&D 5E (2014) Using social skills on other PCs

C'mon now, dude... You don't have to be that defensive. Everyone here is just sharing how they play their games. It's not about "training" people. Setting table expectations at the start of a campaign is something... expected.

D&D 5E (2014) Using social skills on other PCs

In my experience, players tend to declare their actions as questions or in a vague manner when they are hesitant to commit to a certain action. The real complication arises when the DM proceed to describe the outcome: "So, as you touch the runes..." and the player is like: "Whoa there, I never...

D&D 5E (2014) Using social skills on other PCs

You don't have to be an expert in black magic to describe how your character is going on about examining some arcane runes on the floor. You just have to be specific on what kind of approach you are using. Are you touching the runes? Are you casting the Identify spell? Are you consulting the...

D&D 5E (2014) Using social skills on other PCs

My only gripe with "I use investigation to check the desk" is that the Dungeon Master should be the one calling for ability checks.

D&D 5E (2014) Do PCs at your table have script immunity?

They absolutely do exist and they are the same kind of people who use cheat codes in videogames.

D&D 5E (2014) Do PCs at your table have script immunity?

My point is that a game rulebook is no place to tell people to have basic common sense and respect towards other human beings, that's all. Also, the poster I was responding to sounded like he was suggesting that anyone who doesn't share his views on how things should be handled at an RPG table...

D&D 5E (2014) Do PCs at your table have script immunity?

I would even go further and suggest that mutual respect and comraderie between players are desirable things in any group activity. I don't think that it needs to be codified in the rules of any edition. I don't see your point.

D&D 5E (2014) Do PCs at your table have script immunity?

So, it seems D&D 5e is the first game I know of where you have to negotiate with the players beforehand if they are allowed to lose. Maybe it's time to take the "G" out of RPG and everybody will be happy.

D&D 5E (2014) Using social skills on other PCs

Both approaches are covered by the rules. The DMG clearly says you can choose between: 1 - Never rolling dice. 2 - Always roll for everything. 3 - A middle ground between free action adjucation and dice rolling. These approaches are all within RAW.
