D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Honestly, let's just rename them "mooks" and be done with it.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Yes, the class is a disconnected mess of things that "feel" cool with no real substance at all. What makes the situation worse is all the people who seems to be okay with that and always push back when someone complains.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you hope WotC treats the upcoming classic settings?

Yeah, Wizards of the Coast should really leave the old settings alone. Probably for the best.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Ki Fueled Strikes kinda does that.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

It does indeed. Monk is in a really bad shape in 5e, don't get me wrong.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Yes, precisely. My group does a lot of overland travel (Storm King's Thunder) and we use gritty Realism, so every camp night in the wilderness is a short rest. Monk gets a lot of mileage from Quickened Healing.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

2 Ki, but that doesn't stop the monk at my table to use it fairly frequently.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Don't forget that monks have Quickened Healing now.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

To be fair, we were just comparing monks to other light weight melee class.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

If you don't restrict a simple feat from the PHB, they will. It's a well known fact of 3e that players are expected to have easy access to items. Especially wands that are dirt cheap compared to other types of items.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

I think our divergence here is our conflicting notions on how abundant magic items were in 3e. I'm not in the mood to pull my old DMG and look at the wealth by level table though.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

You do realize the invisibility is not required, right? Plenty of ways to make the opponent flat footed without being invisible. It's just the easiest way. Heck, even in Order of the Stick Vaarsuvius uses this tactic of casting Greater Invisibility on Halley... It's not rocket science.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

It relies on sneak attack and rogue's (and bard's, I guess) exclusive skill Use Magic Device... How come it's not "a rogue build"? I'm out.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Yes, I'm not denying the obvious. Getting sneak attack off is easier in 5e. I just said it's a lot stronger in 3.5e And please, don't ignore the very simple, very cheesy and very effective wand build I mentioned above, because that's just one of the ways to get guaranteed, safe, ranged sneak...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Optional in the same sense that anything is optional in any TTRPG, but that's a bit pedantic. I was just making the point that sneak attack used to be more powerful back in third edition. And even though elementals, contracts, undead and ooze were immune to it, most of the enemies a rogue...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Really? I just mentioned a very easy build to get guaranteed ranged sneak attack twice per round... it only really needs a few ranks in one skill and a single feat. If you are really going to compare a dual wand rogue with Pun Pun, I don't think it's line or argument is going to lead us anywhere.

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Of course you could not take the 5ft step on the same turn you used your move action to close in. I never said you could. You also ignored that I specifically mentioned delaying your action and wait for your melee allies to get in position first. And no, crafting magic itens were not "optional"...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Yes, you would provoke an Opportunity Attack for trying to circle the opponent, but if we are talking about medium creatures, all you had to do was a 5 ft step to flank them most of the time. At worst, you would have to delay your action and wait for the fighter to make their 5 ft step first. I...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you hope WotC treats the upcoming classic settings?

To be honest, it's really easy for any DM to just use things from AD&D. It's mostly plug and play, believe me. I've run quite a few modules and used a lot of old setting book info on the fly, without any need for conversion. Because it's so simple, 5e is weirdly compatible with 1e and 2e...

D&D 5E (2014) Why do Monks only have d8 HP instead of d10 HP?

Combat is the primary way you can get killed and usually takes a large portion of table time in any given game session. I am a firm believer that all classes should be able to contribute to it in equal footing. We are going to have to agree to disagree in this one. Now, on the subject of 5e...
