D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Yes. I posted it already. I thought you had read it. "You might be thinking, “Dragons seem pretty magical to me.” And yes, they are extraordinary! Their description even says they’re magical. But our game makes a distinction between two types of magic: • the background magic that is part of...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Isn't there someone in the thread who has taken issue with every mechanical representation of halflings, though?

It seems like it's designed with the opposite intent. More than half of undead creatures are immune to the frightened condition, but they are still susceptible to being turned.

It certainly doesn't have much meaning in an individual game (unless everyone at the table has agreed to use RAW only). If the DM of my game gave my halfling character advantage on a save against Fear Aura and then gave the gnome advantage because of his Gnome Cunning, I wouldn't say a word...

Precisely. And in the sage advice they lay out a specific test to determine whether or not a thing fits into the second category and "seems magicky to me" isn't one of the criteria. In fact, if you want to say that the frightened condition is always magical for the purposes of your role...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Maybe this will clear things up for you. -Regarding what counts as magical for the purposes of magic resistance: -Regarding what can and cannot be dispelled with dispel magic: I don't think there's as much wiggle room here as you seem to think.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Fine, but the result of being frightened by a Pit Fiend is determined by a game rule and a d20 roll. Like a lightswitch? Not really. Within 6 seconds? Sometimes. But that's beside the point. The designers included a game mechanic that imposes a frightened condition. The DC and some conditions...

I agree. I tend to think that "frightened" is non-magical unless a stat block specifies that it is magical.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I have no problem with DMs making their own rulings that are counter to what's in the book. If you want there to be no non-magical fear in your game that's your decision. I just don't think that that's the RAW, or the RAI, or that it makes role-play bad, or that it's somehow contrary to the way...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

My daughter has a debilitating fear of stinging insects. If a wasp gets too close to her, she freaks out. If the wasp flies away she feels better. I'm saying that in the real world, people often don't have the autonomy to "decide" their own emotional state. Fear is a physiological response. It...

Sure... all cops and marines are "immune to frightened condition." Give me a break.

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I explained already in another post. The Monster Manual distinguishes between magical fear and non-magical fear. Nalfeshnee's Horror Nimbus? Magical. Beholder's Fear Ray? Magical. Banshee's Horrifying Visage? not Magical. Pit Fiend's Fear Aura? not Magical. If you don't distinguish, that's your...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

This is addressed in 5e as well, but differently. In 5e there is magic that is a part of the way the world works, (this is like 3e Su) and there is magic caused by spells. The former includes the animating spark of a warforged, dragon flight (if you feel it's necessary to explain the physics...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

Be that as it may, the game gives some monsters an explicit ability to cause the frightened condition in PCs that fail a save. Sometimes it's described as a magical effect but often it's pretty clear that it is not intended to be magical. Halflings are explicitly given a better chance at...

D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

You interpret a sea hag's "Horrific Appearance" or a dragon's "Frightful Presence" as a magical effect? Like, a dragon is no longer scary if it's inside an anti-magic field? Weird... Edit: Sorry for delving back into posts from days ago, but this really is one of the things I especially like...
