Polishing armor and such doesn’t do anything in game. I think.

What are the uses of retainers then? All I can think of is they can carry an extra 450 pounds and keep watch during a long rest. Also they can help you put on and take off armor in half the time. That’s it that I can think off if they don’t gain racial traits.

I would apply at least traits like Darkvision and trance. It wouldn’t make any sense if an elf didn’t have those at bare minimum.

I see background ability’s as something to build off. For example Bad Reputation could mean you know how mess with a persons head and get away with minor crimes.

Just to clarify, the character I’m playing ran away because he was trying to be killed and met people along the way of different races that were misfits like him. Those people became the “retainers”.

That’s the point of firebolt, so he can hunt with arrows he creates out of fire.

He only could use fire bolt to hunt since he can’t go into battle. The reason why he would have fire bolt is only so bow wouldn’t run out of ammo and have cool fire arrows.

I’m asking about AL ruleing for this since I want to make sure I’m not breaking any rules.

The reason why I ask about the high elf is because I’m planning on him hunting animals with a bow. The reason why fire bolt is because it A. gives him limitless arrows since the fire bolt will act like one. B. It’s cooler to have a hunter who hunts with arrows made of fire instead of regular arrows.

Thanks for the clarification. Now I see it as humans are not good retainers. Can a retainer be a variant human, or a high elf with fire bolt?

The reason why I was asking was because I don’t if that’s how it works in AL. It wouldn’t make any sense if an elf didn’t have Darkvision or a half orc not have proficiency in intimidation. I was mostly wondering if they could do more then carry about 450 pounds extra.

So it says you start off with three commoners, but my question is do commoners gain racial trait example: A drow gains drow magic, Darkvision, Trance and such? This is explained well in the PHB I feel.

I’m planning on playing AL for a bit and see if I like how it functions, if not then home games it is.
