    D&D 5E (2014) Rynic's Metamagic Compendium

Yeah I think that's a good example. I'd suggest the following wording just to make it extra-clear: Distant metamagic works on spells with range 5' or greater. Does that include spells like Thunderwave that say "Range: Self (15-ft cube)"?

    D&D 5E (2014) Rynic's Metamagic Compendium

Great point, that would make it totally unambiguous. In fact it's kind of strange that they didn't write it that way, if that's what they intended. This is probably a good question for Crawford via the Sage Advice twitter. Anyone with a twitter account feel like lobbing it over to him?

    D&D 5E (2014) Rynic's Metamagic Compendium

Ah, makes sense. Besides Sword Burst, Beacon of Hope apparently works like that too. Telekinesis deserves special mention, because it allows you to move people/objects to the extent of its range, so if you're lifting and dropping things double the range is double the height and therefore...

D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] Stealth, Hiding and You!

The guide covers the event of a tie between an active search roll and a stealth check (stealth loses, search wins). What about in the case of a tie between passive perception and a stealth roll? Like say I rolled a stealth check of 15 and my opponent has a passive perception of 15? My...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rynic's Metamagic Compendium

FYI: Lots of good info on (and creative uses for) Subtle Spell here in this thread: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?511446-quot-The-Ultimate-Sneak-Mage-quot-or-why-the-community-woefully-under-utilizes-Sorcerers

D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] Playing Dice with the Universe: A Slant Guide to Wild-Magic Sorcerer

Good point, those references to "for you, this is considered a bard spell" points toward that interpretation. Yeah I get that spell slots are universal, not sure what your paladin spell slot comment is referring to.

D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] Playing Dice with the Universe: A Slant Guide to Wild-Magic Sorcerer

Ah, that makes sense. (I'm curious, is it actually documented that way somewhere that I just missed?)

D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] Playing Dice with the Universe: A Slant Guide to Wild-Magic Sorcerer

Well it's definitely on Phb p 209 under the heading "Sorcerer Spells" -- are you saying it's not considered a sorcerer spell just because it's cast from an item instead of a person?

D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] Playing Dice with the Universe: A Slant Guide to Wild-Magic Sorcerer

An interesting question came up at my table, and after searching Sage Advice / errata, I'm not sure this has been addressed. Thought this thread would be a good place to ask. -Wild surge roll can trigger "after you cast a sorcerer spell of 1st level or higher". Say a wild sorcerer picked up a...

    Highest DPR at Level 1?

Only two uses though, and DPR would drop considerably outside of wildshape. So maybe not top overall.

    Highest DPR at Level 1?

For levels 2 to 3, I haven't run the math yet, but I suspect that kobold moon druid might win out. Assuming the DM allows pack tactics to carry over to wild shape but sunlight sensitivity does not --which admittedly might be a big assumption, not looking to reopen that debate here-- the...

    Highest DPR at Level 1?

You sound like a great DM, hopefully I'll get to play in one of your games one day. And thanks for the google link. I guess you didn't notice that when you type that search string, no one's actually discussed this particular question? Results are all for max DPR overall. On the plus side, you...

    Highest DPR at Level 1?

Wow, that might be the most condescending answer I've seen on this sub-forum to-date. Congrats on setting the bar. Yeah, obviously. It'll also depend on how the dice roll, who the DM is, and a number of other factors too. That's why it's called average. Mostly because it's an interesting...

    Highest DPR at Level 1?

Also, if a build has slightly lower DPR --like 1-2 average points-- but in exchange has significant other advantages (like much better survivability), that can definitely be a contender.

    Highest DPR at Level 1?

Hi optimizers, I'm trying to figure out the highest-dpr Level 1 build. AL legal, so PHB+1, no UA, no DMG. Assume it's running Tier 1 modules, so enemy abilities and ACs appropriate to levels 1-4. Also assume short rests every 1-2 fights, and long rests every 4-ish fights. Variant Human Fighter...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rynic's Metamagic Compendium

Personally, I would read a spell that said, for example, "Self (15-foot cone)", as being greater than 5 feet (since 15 feet is without question greater than 5 feet, and self is just the point of origin, not the actual range). But you're right, it's probably good to expect table variation. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rynic's Metamagic Compendium

Nice work! Thanks for putting this together. I especially like your analysis on uses. A few additional thoughts there: Both Distant and Subtle are great for Counterspelling. In either case, the enemy caster can't counter your counterspell -- either because you're out of his range (with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tips for domain multiclass(dip) cleric wizard!

Totally... I didn't mean for it to come off as correcting you, just adding on to your analysis in response to the OP's question. There are a lot of interesting CD's at L2, but IMO none beat Life's, esp given that OP is concerned about party survivability.

    D&D 5E (2014) Tips for domain multiclass(dip) cleric wizard!

If you're going more than one level into Cleric, Life also gives you an absolutely incredible channel divinity -- if your entire party drops, you can pick them all up with 1 action.
