D&D 5E (2014) [GUIDE] Thy Fearful Symmetry: A Circle of the Moon Handbook (original)

What's the consensus on VGtM Kobold Druids? I.e., does Pack Tactics carry over (since it is a benefit, and the wild shape is not physically prevented from doing it), and does Sunlight Sensitivity not carry over (since it is not a benefit)?

    Portent vs. Lucky

Yeah 2 per long rest with Portent (they have to be announced before the roll, the number is known beforehand, and they straight-up replace the die roll) Lucky is 3 per long rest (can be used after the roll, the number is not known beforehand, and they just add one more roll result you can...

    Portent vs. Lucky

Ooh, I'd forgotten that you can use Lucky on attacker's rolls. You can for Portent too, but since you have to use Portent before the roll, it doesn't have that "turn a crit into a miss" use. So that's a big plus in Lucky's favor. This character is a front-liner with high AC (full plate, shield...

    Portent vs. Lucky

Hi folks, I've got a Cleric character that took one level of Wizard. I'm planning out my level progression, and realizing that once I hit Cleric 18 (Character Level 19), I can either take one more level of Wizard to pick up Portent, or I can take Cleric 19 and pick up the Lucky feat. I've never...

Best archer build, all material allowed

Hah CapnZapp great minds think alike, apparently. Good point on using precision over maneuvers. A couple notes: -By Guidance you mean Bless, right? -You say you'll obviously attack with advantage... isn't that usually tough to do from range? Not sure if I'm missing something here.

D&D 5E (2014) Can you Twin Greenflame Blade or Booming Blade?

They are in SCAG. Jeremy Crawford says you can't twin GFB: http://www.sageadvice.eu/2015/11/10/can-you-us-twinned-spell-with-green-flame-blade/ I don't think there's been a ruling for Booming, but based on his ruling for GFB, since Booming only hits one enemy, you should be able to twin it.

Best archer build, all material allowed

My math may be wrong, and I'm only using AL-legal sources, but I recently crunched the numbers and found the following to be the best build I could find (with some specific quirks, noted below): Battlemaster 11/Ranger 3/War Cleric 1/AT Rogue 5. Vhuman with Xbow Expert, picking up Sharpshooter...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Grappler's Manual (2.0) - Grappling in 5th Edition

Edit: Whoops, miscalculated jump numbers in my build. Please ignore::

    Optimizing Volo PC races

I feel like RAW, grappling with a bugbear may be OP. Going to test play it out soon. But in theory, if I'm reading the rules right, a bugbear can grapple from an extra 5' away. If the grapple succeeds, the target has 0 movement until they break free. But the bugbear is still not adjacent, so...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Grappler's Manual (2.0) - Grappling in 5th Edition

Got it, makes sense. I definitely don't want to stretch/break any rules.... I probably should have provided more background. I was specifically going by the PHB section on improvised weapons that says: "In many cases, an improvised weapon is similar to an actual weapon and can be treated as...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Grappler's Manual (2.0) - Grappling in 5th Edition

Ah good call. Still, I think I'm leaning more toward the Barbarian/Rogue route. The earlier effectiveness and the jump/falling damage attack are what sold me (prone with movement, and still have actions/bonus actions? Heck yes). Plus no need to bump Cha is nice, and raging/sneaking fit the...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you like, and what do you not like about Volo's Guide to Monsters? (spoilers)

Heh, true. Oh, and names! No section on Bugbear Names! :..(

Ah, I missed that, thanks! Still, really just a half of a silhouette instead of an actual picture.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Grappler's Manual (2.0) - Grappling in 5th Edition

That's great info, thanks for all the detail Goken100! Really helped me see how build options can play out. At the moment, I'm planning to try a Bugbear grappler. Currently torn between going the Battlemaster Fighter / Lore Bard route and the Barbarian / Rogue route. The Fighter / Bard seems...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you like, and what do you not like about Volo's Guide to Monsters? (spoilers)

I got my copy yesterday, and flipped right to the Bugbear sections in Ch1 and Ch2. I was disappointed to find that 1) There's not a picture of a bugbear in the entire damn book, and 2) while most of the sections in Ch1 and Ch2 have a "roleplaying a ___" section, that seems to have been skipped...

D&D 5E (2014) [Poll] Tides of Chaos frequency: how do you rule?

True. And even with the "always" answer, it seems like Wild is still a sub-optimal spec. But if you're picking Wild for flavor --since the Surge is really the core of Wild's flavor-- you still are getting shortchanged if the answer isn't "always".

D&D 5E (2014) Illusionist - is it as weak as it seems?

Also Mirage Arcane with Malleable Illusions .... Mirage Arcane: "Similarly, you can alter the appearance of structures, or add them where none are present"..."it can turn clear ground into difficult terrain (or vice versa) or otherwise impede movement through the area". So put up a wall, or even...

D&D 5E (2014) Illusionist - is it as weak as it seems?

I have a dream of one day playing a high-level illusionist. No other class/subclass can mess with reality itself like the illusionist can. Illusory Reality is nuts. Plus the ridiculous power of Wish that comes with the Wizard class chassis... If only I didn't find low-level wizards so...

D&D 5E (2014) [Poll] Tides of Chaos frequency: how do you rule?

I'll be running a Wild Sorcerer in an AL later this week. I just checked with the DM on how he rules it. He said 5% chance on every spell; and if Tides of Chaos is used, he will reserve his DM's right to decide when and if it happens automatically. It won't necessarily happen on the next roll...

    D&D 5E (2014) Volo's Guide to Monsters: General Discussion.

Whoah. What CR is Darkling Elder? This is likely a huge boost to Lvl 11-plus Warlocks w/ Devil's sight. A Lock 11 / Sorc X could now even more consistently get advantage on every one of his quickened and regular eldritch blasts, while also having a summoned buddy doing a good deal of damage...
