    Encouraging Tactics in Combat

Since we started also playing Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (3rd and sometimes still 2nd edition), we started considering tactics in combat to also include, and more importantly, "Tactics Before Combat/Encounter." As characters in that game are significantly more like "glass cannons", they have to...

D&D General GM's Closet for the CONAN RPG

My last campaign in Hyboria was set in Vanaheim/Argos/Cimmeria. We used a lot of the Frostburn supplement for 3.5. My players comment that it was one of their favorite campaigns. Our previous campaigns were primarily set in Shem and the deserts towards the Vilayet. There is simply so much...

Impatience has sucked me into many-a-threads. The lack of knowledge and speculation can be fun..to a point. :) jhobjective mixer DC

D&D 5E (2014) What does this photo say to you? [Project: Morningstar)

I shared what I found in my groups and the results of that study. People jump out of the woodwork to attack me b/c I said that electronics in that study and in my groups have been harmful to people being able to stay engaged. I suspect that the hostility on this issue has to do with...

Laptops at the table..and recent research showing how bad it is in education..does it carry over to gaming?

I made a slight response in the other thread. I'm guilty of this myself, but I figure it might be a interesting experiment of the mind because I've observed it numerous times in our own groups that laptops and tablets are more of a distraction than a benefit..and this is the closest...

D&D 5E (2014) What does this photo say to you? [Project: Morningstar)

I wouldn't say "completely." Yes it is a peer reviewed journal. Yes, it was based on actual study. Yes, it was involved in communal learning (lecture, ask, test, repeat) that we all had in school (unless you went to an alternate school). Any GM that works behind a screen and reads read-aloud...

Are megadungeon still a viable play experience?

I have good nostalgia about having built a megadungeon when I was a kid. Now when I look at the stacks of my old D&D products, I simply have no more interest in them. I've got to have plot..and dungeons simply don't carry enough plot outside of how the organisms "get along." If a GM of mine...

D&D 5E (2014) Are you coming back to D&D from another GAME SYSTEM? (theoretically?)

I don't know how many of the rest of you are in this situation, but I'd like to ruminate about the potential benefits of coming back to D&D from a different game system. I'm theoretically coming "back" to D&D after a 6 year hiatus. In the meantime, we've been playing Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay...

Laptops at the table..and recent research showing how bad it is in education..does it carry over to gaming?

This is in relation to this thread and a thought of mine that deserves more general discussion. Yes, "laptops" were dicussed in the past, now we're looking at smaller electronics (even google glasses). Well, recent research on the subject seems to confirm that they are a bad idea in education...

D&D 5E (2014) What does this photo say to you? [Project: Morningstar)

My group is guilty of having electronics at the table (as am I personally). I find that the recent research regarding a person's involvement with the topic being "learned" is significantly reduced and in some cases, people are entirely dropping out, is reflected by my own experience...

    Handling Private Encounters

my players are good about not metagaming. Sometimes I pull a player to the side jus tto increase the tesnion, but that's about it. jh

Uh... since when was this an issue.

I know some people loved 4e. I'd like to state again, for the record, I left 4e (and D&D as a whole, after 25 years of D&D gaming) because I didn't like, in my opinion, the tidal wave of annoying and hard-to-house-rule-out modifiers. It infected the entire system, like a virus and simply...

Uh... since when was this an issue.

I await with baited breath..and will probably H.R. it out if necessary. I'm trying to get my games to move farther and farther away from combats, so more complexity won't necessarily be a good thing. Having to do accounting on misses seems like just something to reduce the feeling of the wiff'...

It should be easy enough to port it into my World of Greyhawk campaign. jh

Uh... since when was this an issue.

Will it be pretty easy to house rule out? Seems kind of like just existing fo accounting sake. I didnt know it was even in 13th A' , but we never got that thick into the rules, and we didnt playtest 5e that far. jh

    Warhammer 3rd or D&D Next?

I tried 4e in the Warhammer world, but it really didn't work out (for numerous reasons). I toyed with playing in the Melnibone world as well because that's really bizarre. In the end, we simply started in 2nd edition WFRP and now play 3rd edition WFRP (oh, the pretty colors :) Here's my house...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E: A chiropractic adjustment for D&D (and why I'm very hopeful)

The Atlas of D&D design is of fun, creativity, and paternalism. I love to imagine a writer of such a major invention as having to fight his instinct of what he feels is best, with what the larger audience desires, with just plain fun. The adjustment of the pillar of gaming is not to re-align...

AD&D 1E Just got done running some 1e

I love these threads. It is just great to hear. I reminisce about my BD&D fighter, Taraz, and my "whatshisname" Assassin that got fried by a Lich. I used to beg my friend's brother all the time to play. So many great memories.

    Warhammer 3rd or D&D Next?

You don't need any expansions for WFRP3. Start with your CORE SET and you can look at other stuff later. I've been playing this game since it was released and have worked on lots of fan stuff for it. The only things you need for more than 3 players is this: BASIC ACTION SUMMARY SHEET...
