AD&D 1E Inquiry: How do fans of AD&D (aka 1E) feel about the Unearthed Arcana supplement?

We used it all at one point. Not being dorks, we also realized some areas were better left as ROLEPLAYING INSPIRATION than hard rules. We went to milestone xp early so the barbarian hard limits to who he could have as friends was quickly forgotten. Weapon specialization was HEAVILY used...

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Player Options for a Campaign Setting

Those of us who have run evil campaigns (or one shots in my case) can vouch for the fact that evil crosses a line. Evil = all the worst crimes. "Not evil" doesn't cross that line. I don't care to ever repeat the experience of dming Scarlet Brotherhood from the bad guys point of view. Consider...

AD&D 1E Inquiry: How do fans of AD&D (aka 1E) feel about the Unearthed Arcana supplement?

We used some of it. More often we used new races and classes from DRAGON though. We handwaived some of the stuff like bbns not playing well with m.users etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Player Options for a Campaign Setting

I agree. Remove the g-word and then move ahead with traditional re-Greyhawk-ization. I love the river-folk. They are an all-time favorite pc culture for my characters.

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk: Player Options for a Campaign Setting

I'd certainly start with the HUMAN cultures: Flan, Oeridian, Suel, Baklunish, Rhenn, OA-Asian, Erypt, Amedioan, Hepmon, etc. Then I'd have the races that are standard to D&D and figure out a way for there to still be some semblance of regional cultures rather than "all everything all the...

How much should the GM talk during a session?

Some players talk more than others. I find the less I talk the slower the game is.

How Do You Stop TPKs/Killer GM Habits?

Xp for completing milestones rather than killing stuff. Viable run away rules without "free attacks." Plots that go beyond combat every session. Good luck.

    Top 3 All-Time RPG Supplements

Dnd 3 Sandstorm - I've used the heck out of this (and Frostburn) over the years. WFRP3 Lure of Power - massive eye-opening about non-combat special actions Dragon Magazine - while it was in print, this was the single greatest resource for art and ideas.

Too Much Effort to Make New Characters?

This is a really great question to ask. In 40 years of being a dm, I've set some table rules: #1 No xp penalty for replacement characters---EVER. Xp penalty is a outdated notion from 1974 gaming and is a dick-move that punishes good players. #2 Char gen sux arse. I hate it myself. It is a...

Any crunchy RPG's out there anymore?

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 4th edition has "Advantage" mechanic added in by someone "higher up." If you love bewildering amounts of tracking the Advantage and large charts of criticals wfrp4e is for you! Our group went back to 3e WFRP (which is REALLY saying something about crunchiness!).

The GM is Not There to Entertain You

Bratty players exist for certain who dont realize they need to bring their A-game. I like that phrase Yoda says from Empire': LUKE What's in the cave? YODA Only what you bring with you.

What lessons did you learn from other systems?

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd edition taught me about the three-act system of adventure design and the rule of three. It keeps me from overdesigning adventures and from under-doing enough plots and NPCs to keep the players vested in a bigger picture. [EDIT: ADD: I think I also learned that...
