    D&D 5E (2024) Another D&D 2024 Monster Preview: The Kuo-Toa!

I love that goofy pic, and mentally fill in the thumbs up. I've also thought of it as fish Beavis. "Water! Water!"

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Beyond Article on Crafting

How long does full plate take to make in a world with easy, unlimited magic? Where it can draw on techniques where plate has been made for THOUSDANDS of years? By dwarven artisans who hone their trade for hundreds of years compared to some real world schlub who maybe works the forge for 30 tops...

D&D General I'm a Creep, I'm a Powergamer: How Power Creep Inevitably Destroys Editions

We roleplay a lot, including in combat, but action combat is why I play and run D&D. Characters interactions with NPC is why combat can have stakes, but the action is the draw. D&D is a bad game for social resolution compared to modern game design and I have no interest in the pixel bitching of...

D&D General I'm a Creep, I'm a Powergamer: How Power Creep Inevitably Destroys Editions

Honestly? Yes. Otherwise I won't bother will all of the jank that comes with D&D. I'm not going to deal with all the fiddly knobs and dials when combat is just a sack of HP trading whacks with another sack of HP for d6 damage. I'd play an actual rules light game.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

D&D has always sucked at simulating anything real and certainly is not a "game designer game". You spoil your own fun by peeking behind the curtain and bringing a magnifying glass to catch the strings and hatches, then gripe you can't enjoy the magic show. Stop hitting yourself! And I don't...

That isn't expending a limited resource.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

I'm talking about the actual use of the ability at the table being disruptive and slowing down play. Nothing about in-game fiction. Expending a resource to force a reroll is more powerful than expending a resource to impose disadvantage. No one is going to make a monster reroll a 4. But you...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

Getting a 20% universal discount is no more absurd than getting the same +X to persuade a beholder, elf, or awakened mongoose. If you can accept one, the other should be easy enough.

Charisma, persuasion, intimidation, deception etc are already universal.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

The issue isn't the luck, it's that your decision to use it needs to happen after you are targeted, but before the roll is made and the outcome known. That's the problem. It interrupts the flow of play.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

Recharge rolls on monster powers. Initiative where everyone daintily pauses whole the person before them finishes their turn before they start running. Dodging fireballs with a Dex save without actually moving. Armor Class. Hell, levels and hit points. The whole game is an abstraction. If it's...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

You limit classes to fighters, barbarians, monks and rogues? Because otherwise there's magic in every single encounter in 5e.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

You can simply describe the reason once or twice, then ignore it afterwards, much like any scutwork in D&D. One time it's because of a cosmetic defect, another time it's because they get a friend of a friend discount, another time because the crafter shows them a trick and they vendor is...

True, but spending a feat that amounts to "you have a club" is trash.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

I agree, but it interrupts the flow. I'd prefer to not have to pause to give the opportunity, which is what this would require. IMO, its a negative play experience for the table. I often have 4 adults and a couple of kids around 10 years old at the game, so do everything I can to speed up play.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Background and Origin Feat Article

Whoever designs this nonsense needs to actually play at a table with all this fiddly order of operations garbage. As written, you should be imposing disadvantage before they roll. Meaning you announce the target of Buttwhipper the Mighty, the guy with lucky will stare at you blankly, then as...

D&D General Classic Adventure Themed Dice Sets From Beadle & Grimm's

Yeah, I feel if the dice boxes/rolling trays were on Etsy for $25 - 30 people would be tripping over themselves to order them. A basic set of dice will run $5 or so. As a whole, these aren't particularly overpriced for a limited edition thing.

    Worlds of Design: Not-So-Friendly Fire

I'm not sure how "the melee guy gets hit more" is a mark in their favor. What irritates me about many friendly fire rules is that the arrow just magically knows who your friend is and hits them, rather than any of the other hostile targets which may be adjacent or interposed.

    D&D 5E (2024) So Class Complexity...

Option paralysis and fear of picking wrong add complexity in creation and play, plus the gish style of bladelocks is more difficult than being a wizard. The wizard gets to repick all their superpowers after a nap (and during short rests now). In play, their only feature is spells, compared to...
