D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

Using a basic spell that buffs stealth to sneak isn't exactly optimized...

D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

We're discussing RAW. I'm explaining why the new surprise doesn't make 5e's combat even more of a joke than it is. You guys can ignore it, but there's a reason for it being the way it is. It preserves some very faint element of danger, and to tamps down on dull play loops that overly reward one...

D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

Pass without trace lasts an hour and gives +10 to stealth to the whole party. Monsters have pathetic perception scores. It is trivially easy to get surprise in 5E.

D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

Then why have rules at all? Why not let mages call down meteor swarms at 1st level, or let fighters just say "I cut his head off" and if the attack hits, you cut their head off? The game's rules are designed with balance in mind, and various mechanics support this. The game is firmly in combat...

D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

Right, but the RAW does matter for game balance. And because everything is a 2 thump chump, the game doesnt want to hand out a free round.

D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

Sure, double everything's HP and add CR to damage, 1/2 CR to AC, saves, etc. If you rebuild the entire MM's math it might prove a challenge or have something go beyond 2 rounds. Even at 3 rounds, a surprise round is too much. 5E is already a cakewalk in the player's favor.

D&D General Surprise, Initiative and What will you do?

All of you guys handing out surprise rounds might as well just declare the other side dead and save yourself some time lol. A full round of unloading straight up ends 5e's pathetic enemies. An at that point the campaign is now a series of auto win ambushes with Pass Without Trace's broken +10...

2024 Player's Handbook Officially Live on D&D Beyond

Have you SEEN the list of basic features "coming soon" since 2019? Again, you can't do basic customization, like making a custom weapon with different damage dice, masteries, etc.

2024 Player's Handbook Officially Live on D&D Beyond

Tons of money coming in and it's still run like one guy's side project he tinkers with on lunch breaks.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

It's not mechanics first. In such a world, the body might be able to be knit back together but unless the spirit is there, the spell won't work. Its as much simulationist as anything else in D&D.

Project Sigil All the Deets on Project Sigil the D&D 3D Virtual Tabletop

Not gonna lie, this looks dope. It's probably going to be expensive as well. Hoping you can share minis across a campaign like you share campaign assets/books.

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

They aren't "just" noncombatants. They're the children of the goons the group just killed, which is a real friggin buzzkill, particularly for new people and grinds the game to a halt both in and out of character for a moral and ethical debate rather than buttkicking for goodness. Unless they...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

I'm not sure if you're aware, but fire ants aren't sentient beings with the capacity to learn and change. Gygax's gross attitudes should remain buried in the past. A starter adventure should be a fun introduction to the mechanics, not crap that grinds the game to a halt with ethical debates...

    D&D 5E (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Fortunately they're pretty easy to add if you want to engage in nobody's favorite activity "debating what to do with prisoners for a couple hours".

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

Not really. You can put a charge of the spell in there, but it doesn't properly hyperlink. It's a lot of effort that amounts to renaming a piece of equipement "Scroll of Acid Arrow" Compared to Foundry, which is simply dragging a spell from the compendium to your inventory and the scroll is...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

That's because the site is more focused on selling content than delivering a quality product and experience. They want custom content to be difficult, because otherwise you could just create houserule copies of the 2-3 mechanical bits you actually use from any sourcebook. Same reason they...

    D&D 5E (2024) How D&D Beyond Will Handle Access To 2014 Rules

My thanks for finally solving the 2d8 damage weapon, but all of that is absurdly more complicated than it needs to be. Foundry shows what a decent product looks like. D&D Beyond is trash in comparison. Actually the 2d8 weapon still doesnt work. You simply can't edit items, you can only rename...

D&D General How long has your Current Group gamed together?

One friend and I marked 35 years of gaming together this year, having started playing together in junior high. I think the rest of the adults are over 20 years now though, save for one new friend we made 2 - 3 years ago. Some of the parents bring some of their kids, but damn the rules of the...
