    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

If the thread asked "Do you guys think the champion is a trap option? I think so. Discuss" then I'd welcome all the "Nope, think it's fine" responses. But when the thread assumes that it IS broken, and asks instead for help fixing it, people whose opinions offer no fixes or suggestions towards...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

Sure, look, it's no problem if you disagree with the premise of the thread. But let me ask you this: If your opinion is simply "it's not broken", why bother coming on at all just to say that? I'm not trying to suggest that people should stifle their opinions, but in a thread where you have to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

Alright, precious, that's not how public forums work. Whatever puts you to sleep at night. Not what I said at all. I simply said that, for myself, I don't go into a "what if?" forum whose premise is that "I think something could be better if fixed this way" and jump in just to be contrary for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

That's what I said. Up the crit range to a max of 25%, or 16, fix remarkable athlete to full proficiency, and instead of the extra fighting style, which equates to everyone taking +1 AC anyway, allow a choice of a flat +1 AC or +1 to hit and damage, like an expert of arms or armor kinda thing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

Nope, that isn't how public forums work. I omit plenty of threads because the purpose of them doesn't agree with me, and simply getting on there to offer a contrary opinion would be a waste of everyone's time, rather than adding something productive to what the OP wanted in the first place. And...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

Yes, I was wrong. Sorry. Anyway, if you don't agree with the original premise that the champion needs work, this discussion isn't for you. This discussion assumes that you feel that the champion is a trap option, suck alternative, subpar archetype. Yes, the battlemaster's abilities are on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

No worries about the tone, my bad. Yes, if you say no vanilla try chocolate, fine. But this is a discussion where there are only 3 kinds of ice cream flavors, 2 of them being gourmet designer creations and 1 being a harry potter joke jelly bean puke flavored one. Then saying "Don't like the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

Nope, not trying to convince anyone of anything. Just wanted to get a general idea for how people would feel about my fixes, not to convince them that they need to be enacted in order to make the champion better, and anything I argue is in the spirit of debate, not because I'm personally miffed...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

Sorry, but reckless attack IS limited to the barbarian's first attack. While the wolf totem down the road benefits everyone, it benefits the barbarian on his second attack the most. While I understand that all barbarians aren't half-orcs, I quoted that example to provide the absolute maximum...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

I understand that advantage skews the results a bit, but honestly, how often is the fighter getting advantage on his attacks? I was playing a champion to level 8 and I can remember maybe once in the entire campaign that I rolled with advantage for any of my attacks. Meanwhile, the barbarian was...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

Can we get rid of this notion that the champion is some kind of training wheels, beginner friendly alternative to a more resource tracking concept? That's not the point of this thread. We all know that champion is a great option for those who don't know the game or don't want to track anything...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

While I understand that D and D is PvE and a collaborative game, I'm trying to improve the champion as a stand alone option. Honestly, crits suck in 5e and an archetype that grants a measly 10% increase to already lackluster crits is just bad. I saw a great idea on here that someone said that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

This. For an archetype whose bread-and-butter thing is dealing damage and critting more often, champion doesn't deal more damage or even crit more often against a semi-lucky player. Sure, mathematically it looks like the champion would crit a bunch, but on a normal night in a normal game, that...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

I'm not sure how people can say that the changes are excessive. At level 3, you normally get a measly 5% extra chance to crit, and under the best circumstances, this equates to an extra 2d6 damage, wow an average extra of 6 damage to your regular attack roll 1 out of 10 times. In past editions...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

You sure? Remember that crits only double damage dice, and disregarding multi-classing, critting on an 18 is paultry for 17 levels of investment into an archetype.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

I dunno, I played a champion fighter to level 8 and the increased critical range was barely noticeable. Increased as it would be with these changes, I feel like it would be significant enough to take this archetype. The only thing I'd amend is to make the second increase to 16 rather than 15, to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fixing the Champion

I think we can all agree that the champion archetype for the fighter is underwhelming and seems a bit nerfed compared to battlemaster and eldritch knight. So, I wanted to think of a way to make the champion just as viable an option as the other two with some homebrew. Here's what I came up with...

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

Well then I guess the question becomes: thematically and mechanically, what fits the "master swordsman" concept better, the resilient dex or alert feat?

D&D 5E (2014) STR and DEX fighter stupid?

Damn, good point. Then in that case alert is probably better, because even without proficiency, +2 or +3 to dex saving throws is pretty significant over nothing at all right? Or is it still more worth it to have the proficiency bonus at the cost of some initiative and the other alert bonuses?
