D&D 5E (2014) Would you let your player choose their magic items they get?

No need to make lists or let the PCs choose. I know what the classes (builds) are and which weapons the PCs are using. The few magic items I use in my current 5e campaigns were all very helpful to the group. Random ones are potions, scrolls and other more common items.

D&D General To Domain or not to Domain?

AD&D (circa 1982-84) : In the rare campaign I was player (Magic-User) the King was willing to sell us a problematic valley if we cleared the land. We had payments to make every 3 months. So we cleared the land and a few nearby dungeons getting gold to make the payments. We went to the capital to...

D&D General To Domain or not to Domain?

For some players and DMs a big part of reaching level 10 (name level in old school jargon) is to start to carve out a domain, attract followers, build castles, churches and towers. Some call it the Domain Game. It's like a mini game of civilization inside the campaign. The Master book of BECMI...

[Osprey Games] Romance of the Perilous Land

Just finished creating 4 characters. Only takes 10 minutes per character. A knight (aristocrat), a ranger (falconer), a thief (seafarer) and a cunning folk (scholar). I'm ready to do a solo random quest to test the system. Hand made smaller character sheets so they take less space on my table.

D&D General Name a great dungeon room, trap, encounter, or puzzle from a published adventure (any edition)

Inverness was fun. We did it in the 80s using the pre-gen characters and with a timer just like rpga.

D&D General Name a great dungeon room, trap, encounter, or puzzle from a published adventure (any edition)

The rotating corridor in B4 Lost City is fun. Characters must rotate the corridor, using symbols, in order to access different parts of the level. It's clever non-linear approach. It is also stressful when the PCs can hear the corridor rotate while they are in one of the areas. Will they be...

Yes it was a great D&D movie. Made the mistake of watching it again last year. Didn't age very well. Willow is still watchable.

    D&D 5E (2014) Solving Static Fights

You are aware that with 5e a character can use the Disengage Action to avoid OAs? My players use it all the time. I don't find AOs a problem with 5e. There is no need to remove OAs. In 5e PCs can also move freely around an enemy as long at they don't leave Reach. That is very flexible and makes...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

In 1977 Gygax wrote: Quote: AD&D : As AD&D is an ongoing game of fantasy adventuring, it is important to allow participants to generate a viable character of the race and profession which he or she desires. While it is possible to generate some fairly playable characters by rolling 3d6, there...

Worlds of Design: Rolls vs. Points in Character Building

Player control over ability rolls was given in the Holmes edition (1977). They are rolled in order, then class is chosen. Holmes introduces «adjusting ability scores» to raise the Primes by lowering others. A first step at mitigating randomness.
