    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

Want to have more fun? You already know about the ridiculous interpretation of the rules that you can't see someone who hid who is walking straight towards you in the open. Believe it or not, there's a line in the DMG that supports that interpretation. So, give me a monster with (say) a...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

It's a bit weird, because this is the Hide Action description... "With the Hide action, you try to conceal yourself." So, the player is concealing themselves from the GM? :) I'm not entirely sure you can read too much into the split between player and characters.

D&D 5E (2014) Problems with Tales from the Yawning Portal

I much prefer the Sunless Citadel to Forge of Fury, but that's mainly because I have a LOT of fun with the various humanoid races trying to ally with the adventurers against the others. (Forge feels a bit dull to me. Of this series, I actually really enjoyed James Wyatt's The Speaker in Dreams...

D&D 5E (2014) Problems with Tales from the Yawning Portal

Stuff like this makes me want to check the original printing and see it's a change to the text or the original also had this error an no-one noticed! Area 14 has no handaxe apparent in the original text description... however, Yarrack possesses a masterwork handaxe in his treasure (in an NPC...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

I honestly think that one of the sections of the DMG in Running the Game should have been about how to handle hiding and stealth. As with many others here, I have my own set of rules for how it works. I think that - presently - the gold standard for comprehensive stealth rules goes to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

Yep. Absolutely. There's some fascinating wreckage of rules in the 2014 PHB. See, you've got this text telling you whether you can hide: "The DM decides when circumstances are appropriate for hiding. When you try to hide, make a Dexterity (Stealth) check. Until you are discovered or you stop...

If so, I have a really bad Perception! :)

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

That half of the EN world player base is right… when you read what’s in the PHB. It’s this weird case of the rule being incredibly specific (very technical) and then using the word “find” and assuming we know what that means. While also using “find” in the previous paragraph and giving it by...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

The 2024 rules mean that if one enemy can see you/finds you, you're hidden from none of them. One weird thing in how the rules are constructed is that it says you can hide with 3/4 cover... but you also must be out of Line of Sight of all enemies. 3/4 cover means you're not out of sight! (I...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

One correction as presented in the 2024 PHB... Light obscurement isn't sufficient: Instead you need 3/4 cover, full cover OR total obscurement. Also out of line-of-sight of all enemies. Though the PHB says you need a DC 15 on the Stealth check to successfully Hide and become Invisible, I'm...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thoughts on Stealth and D&D2024

So, the last few days I’ve been reading the new Stealth rules with all the attention I gave to the AD&D initiative rules, and similarly getting very frustrated. The words “incomplete and half-baked” keep coming to mind. The rules for entering Stealth have this massive hole where you...

D&D 5E (2024) My first use of the 2025 Monster Manual (humour)

My level 16 Greyhawk campaign, now in its third year (and 64th session) saw the characters back in their home town of Brusington after an extended foray against stone giants serving Incabulos, the plague deity. It had been tough and punishing. They wanted some time off, and so I gave them a few...

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

I thought they were called... elves? Honestly, I don't mind the idea that after the drow went to the underground caverns where they were... changed... by the eldritch magic down there, they became riven by discord again and some ended up elsewhere. But honestly, the modern take on drow just...

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

Did anyone use the 2014 DMG? :) To a large extent, I wish we still had the AD&D drow which were far more distinctive than their modern day versions. The interesting thing about the 2014 tables is that they include the monster traits for beings like grimlocks, hobgoblins and orcs, which...

Evil Drow Statblocks to Return in Forgotten Realms Rulebooks Later This Year

Plus the traits in the PHB are designed for players, not monsters. Or did I miss the bit when they went back to the 3E method of constructing NPCs and PCs in exactly the same way?

D&D 5E (2014) Waterdeep - Dungeon of the Mad Mage

The basic problem it has (and it's my long-running annoyance with Undermountain, as well as other published megadungeons) is that it doesn't have a low-level area. The beginning area is for level 5 characters. It's really worth remembering that every Undermountain product only details PART of...

D&D 5E (2024) 2024 DMG: Thoughts on the Sample Adventures

Huh. Found an error. "Corrupted Cave. Use the Underdark Warrens map in Appendix B for the corrupted cave. Ignore the secret door and the inner chambers behind it. Close off the tunnels leading off the map to the south, east, and north. The characters enter the cave in the southeast, following...

D&D 5E (2024) Is anyone at WOTC paying attention to what they print any more?

Yeah, I think it's just they forgot about the interaction. It's dangerous hiding stuff in conditions!

D&D 5E (2024) Is anyone at WOTC paying attention to what they print any more?

Nope, Paralyzed has worked that way for 10 years.
