    D&D 5E (2014) Evolution of D&D, and choices

The world we live in now has moved faster than anyone thought possible back in January 2020. This is a year like no other. 5e brought change. It introduced artwork that is positive and inclusive. It is a step in the right direction. But for many it is one that took too long and was resisted. I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Evolution of D&D, and choices

Sadly, I agree with you. I like 5e and have fun DM-ing it, but.... — that’s for another thread.

    D&D 5E (2014) Evolution of D&D, and choices

Sure, they can — and likely will — do that. But, to me, that is not a question of evolution and choice. It’s reactive, drag-me-into-the-now-change. Also, beyond adding a new species / genus it won’t necessarily address the customisation issue as the structure 5e is built upon is not designed...

D&D General (Anecdotal) conversations with Asian gamers on some problems they currently face in the D&D world of RPG gaming

I agree that you could have a source book. I think removing alternatives only serves to reinforce the dominant culture.

    D&D 5E (2014) Evolution of D&D, and choices

I’m not sure that this is an either / or situation. Yes, 5e is doing well. And it’ll do so until it’s not. Change is not incremental. It is radical. It is transformative. It is unexpected. It can totally change the expectations and our understanding of how things have worked before. History is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Evolution of D&D, and choices

Simply, an attribute bonus / penalty system is a slippery slope. There are better ways to account for biology No. I’m suggesting that delivering an inclusive and diverse D&D game means a radical change. It means move away from a race based system to a class system. This will means a different...

    D&D 5E (2014) Evolution of D&D, and choices

I’m not sure that an optional rule system for playing classes will cut it. From my perspective, it simply bakes in the race issue and it nods and winks at those who want to persist with questionable D&D origins. (Talk about digging a hole for oneself!) If WotC claims to be inclusive and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Evolution of D&D, and choices

Reading this and other threads has me thinking that the evolution of D&D needs to be total - a new edition will come sooner than later. The preferred default system in 5e of determining ability point shoehorn players who want a “strong, long lasting” character into stereotypical PCs - the...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Jeremy Crawford Talks D&D Alignment Changes

I know. However, my point (sarcastically) was that rules are sliding into guidelines to be used at the DM’s discretion. Discretion’s great but it becomes a real problem when that’s all there is. Too much discretion means the absence of rules and that creates confusion and one helluva mess.

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC's Jeremy Crawford Talks D&D Alignment Changes

I suspect if they are 5e D&D police they’d probably allow druids wearing metal armour. After all, as Mr Crawford reminds us, “D&D has general rules and exceptions to those rules.” Ergo, if everything is general, than nothing is specific and there are no rules.

D&D General The Gygaxian Origins of Drow and Some Thought on their Depiction As Villians

Much the same. As a newbie way back, I remember being condescendingly told that I couldn’t play a dark elf because they’re always lawful evil. I wan’t confident back then to say that’s stupid.

D&D 3.x Restating or not restating RHoD

Thanks for the advice, including the 5e conversion. I play 5e with my kids and thought they might like it given it’s LotR feel. re: Miha, my crew are a very inclusive bunch and Iget The sense they would be happy to have her join them if she wasn’t obviously evil.

D&D 3.x Restating or not restating RHoD

Just starting RHOD in iso after 2 or more years planning with a Bard 6, Ranger 5, Monk 6, and Cleric 6. Yes, no strong arcane magic users(!) but I’m running a low magic game (For white hats, the black hats aren’t so worried about these inconvenient rules). I’ve reasoned that in the Greyhawk...

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk, and race options for Oerth PCs

That sounds cool. I definitely think the rest of Oerth needs fleshing out with the same principles as Greyhawk - broad brush histories and stuff (eg, local history and civilisation / society structures). A module here and there or some hints about where some of the current 5e modules good be...

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk, and race options for Oerth PCs

Love Greyhawk and am Dm-ing games in 3.5e and 5e in that setting. BUUUUT, any setting book should be bigger than Greyhawk - which is a bit too focussed on a euro- setting (leaving aside the 3.x Living Greyhawk that was geo-located to countries, cities, etc from the ‘00s). What is needed is to...

Connection between Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk

I know it is not canon, but I’ve thought FR and Greyhawk coexist on Oerth but that something (other than distance) physically blocks access between the Flaeness and the FR - thus the need to pass through some portal. In my mind, I’ve thought the FR might be on the lands adjoinjng the Oceanum...

    D&D 5E (2014) WotC Delays New D&D Book Announcement

The book’s name is hiding in playing sight. It is “Com Ingsoon and the Keep of Adven Toorers Danglin”. It is an expansion of the FR westwards into the Forgettable Lands of Wothefa. Com Ingsoon is the author - much like Volo and Mordekainen has been in other 5e books. However, Com Ingsoon is a...

Paleo-gaming? Does that mean activated almonds, beef jerky and low carb beer rather than potato chips, chocolate and wheat beer? :ROFLMAO:

    D&D 3.x the 3e skill system

Agreed. The basic premise is that everyone brings something different to the table - different focus, different abilities. Even in circumstances where everyone chooses to be the same race and class, 3.x and it’s persistence with using die to determine abilities meant each character would be...
