Combating My Own Boredom as a Player

It's been 10 or so years since I was anything but a GM, but the last time I was, my character teamed up with and developed strategies with some of the other characters in the group. Now, this was a 5th Edition Adventurer's League game, so there were sometimes a LOT of players, but there were...

Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

The first Kickstarter I backed was Timothy Brown's "Dragon Kings" in 2014. Since then I've backed 90-someting more. Out of all of those, there are only two I don't expect to ever fulfill. Both are cases where I backed them to show support to the creators and while it would be nice to actually...

D&D General What modules have you reused for multiple campaigns

My answer here is more or less the same as it was in the other thread. I've run "Court of the Necromancers" from the Al-Qadim sourcebox Cities of Bone a few times; I love that adventure. I've run "The Portal Under the Stars" from the DCC Core Rulebook a bunch of times. I ran a few of the...

For those doing TTRPG online, what are your reasons?

The only reason I use a VTT is that I run a weekly DCC game for my 11yo and his friends and they live 3,000 miles away from me atm. That said, one thing I love about using a VTT is the "fog of war" option. I wish I had that kind of option in my in-person games, especially playing DCC, since...

Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

On occasion I will, but I'm seriously trying to limit myself. There are games I buy specifically to show support to the creators; I have a couple of unfulfilled Kickstarters that don't bother me because I backed them to show support, not because I actually wanted the product. And there are...

What Brought You to EN World Today?

It's part of my daily rotation and has been for almost a decade now. I do push my own products and projects on here sometimes, too, when I have some to push. And I love seeing our stuff show up in other folks' posts and columns, ofc.

Is There Possibility of a PF1.5 or a 3.5 Revival? Whether Directly or Something With Similar 'Ethos'

Dungeon Crawl Classics filters original edition D&D through 3rd edition mechanics. It maybe isn't exactly what you're looking for but it's been going strong for over 10 years now and is only expanding.

What magic system that uses some form of power points (e.g. casting spell x costs 3 points) is your favorite?

My vote goes to the magic system from DCC RPG. It's very simple but has tons of potential results for each spell, and keeps things unpredictable. It's also an excellent mechanical representation of how using magic can be extremely dangerous.

What Published Modules Have You Run or Played Multiple Times?

Not counting playtests for stuff I've written, there are only a handful of adventures I've run multiple times. One is "Court of the Necromancers" from the 2e Al-Qadim Cities of Bone sourcebox, which remains probably my favorite adventure of all time. Another is "The Portal Under the Stars" for...

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

I haven't tracked ammunition, and haven't required or cared if players track ammunition, in over 20 years. I'm a way I feel bad about that; one of the big reasons archers never dominated battlefields back in the day was because of their limited stock of arrows (which were very difficult to...

Must You Tell Your Players What Adventure You Are Running?

I have never, in over 30 years of gaming, had players who gave half a toss about the name of the adventure I was running. If any ever asked, I'd tell them, but nobody ever has. That's across many different games/systems, from various editions of D&D to derivatives like Dungeon Crawl Classics to...

D&D General Dark Sun as a Lovecraftian Setting

It all looks good/workable to me. I love inserting cosmic horror into most any campaign, and you're right - Dark Sun is pretty well primed for it.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

Fair enough. I've never actually used the dice in a game; I bought a set for my kid and set for myself as a memento. But the company that made them makes all kinds of similar dice, with different stuff in the middle - dinosaurs, eyeballs, whatever - and maybe it's all novelty stuff. My duck set...

D&D General Why did you have to cancel/reschedule your most recent session?

I run games with small groups. If even one of the players can't make it, we're out. The last couple/few times we've had to cancel, it was because one of the polayers couldn't make it.

None of them is a witch. Relax.

D&D General Why grognards still matter

My ducky dice will take all comers. Bring it on. (for the record, I'm a Companion by the OP's most excellent ranking system; started my TTRPG career with Earthdawn 1st Edition ca. 1993, began playing D&D with 2nd Edition - Dark Sun, to be exact - a few months later, and never looked back)

How do you tabletop these days?

In theory, I run three games every week (all Dungeon Crawl Classics): A game on Wednesday evenings at my FLGS, a game on Sunday mornings over Roll20 for my 11yo and his friends, and a game on Sunday afternoons with my family around our dining table. In practice, the only ones that happens...

Missing players and other players running their PCs

I tend to run small (2-3 player) groups, so if someone can't make it we just don't play. Back when I was in high school I stood in for a friend, playting his PC in a Ravenloft game when he couldn't make it. Over the course of that session I lost his war elephant but gained him a vampire...

    Psionics--the Poll!

I picked "yes." Even though . . . I've always loved the idea of psionics in D&D, but the execution has IMO always had issues. It's either been too simple (ie pointless) or too complicated, and since it's never been part of the base game, the application has always been inconsistent. I kind of...
