Go on adventures. Explore the dungeons and the wilderness. Become a pirate for awhile. Rescue a princess. Discover magical items and locations of great power. Spread law (or chaos) across the land. Amass riches and build a stronghold. Levy fair taxes and rule justly or crush all...
We have a middle-of-the-road solution. We give PCs their constitution modifier in initial hit points instead of their constitution score. We also subtract a monster's constitution score from its hit points (2x constitution for elites, 4x for solos). The result is that low level heroes and...
I don't think there's a Deinonychus in the MM, although I could be wrong. I do like Kunimatyu's, particularly that Cunning Hunter power.
Here's a T-Rex I grabbed from either here or the WoTC boards:
Dinosaur, Tyranosaurus Rex; Level 8 Solo Brute
Huge natural beast (Reptile)
HP 390; Bloodied...
Let me just clarify one point from that huge post. For magical items, I intend on using the descriptions straight out of the 3LB + Supplement I or the 1st edition DMG. For example, Gauntlets of Ogre Power will give the wearer an 18 strength, rather than whatever sissy power they have in 4E. I...
I'm a big fan of OD&D (and when I say OD&D I mean the 1974 boxed set), but it's hard to find people who are willing to play anything but the newest editions. So I've been compiling some house rules myself to run OD&D adventures with players who are more interested in a 4E game. My ultimate...
Wow. Brown and yellow mold are listed as AC 9. I never noticed that, although I guess it makes sense given the order of publication. You learn something new every day. Thanks, Robert.
In practice, I didn't think there was much splitting of the market at all. My group, like most I think, freely bought and mixed both AD&D and basic D&D source books and adventures. It's not like there was much conversion necessary. We wouldn't even bother switching the base AC from 9 to 10 if...
I played Stendarr for several years, and took him from level 1 to level 10 or so before he was killed by a confused party member (Sam Teppic, a swashbuckler and a fighter of the same level, although the two characters could not have been more different.). Stendarr fancied himself a vigilante...
I ran a magic-user named Slithelex from 1st level until 9th level. He was a slithering tracker (SR #5) who was polymorphed into a human. Well, mostly polymorphed; the character had long, gross hair and was always covered with a thin layer of slime. He devoted his life to alchemy, hoping to...
I hear you, buddy. Back in 2000, I felt exactly like do now. Keep playing your game, and you'll be surprised to find how many people are publishing new products for it. The only downside to playing an OOP game is that it's harder to find players. A lot of times, you just have to decide...
You think basement would be the first choice. We play in my dining room, my friend's basement, and in the conference room at work (after hours, of course!)
I was pretty surprised by the poll results until I noticed the age of the thread!
For me the order is: (from best to worst)
OD&D, Holmes, Mentzer, Moldvay, AD&D, 2nd edition, AD&D +UA, 4E, 3.0, 2nd edition + Player's Option, 3.5
I also run a once-a-month game. It's OD&D, however, so it might be a little easier for me. If you have a six hour session in d20, a handful of combats will take up most of that time, while we could have 15 combats in the same amount of time if we really wanted to.
I run a traditional megadungeon campaign, and in no way will a TPK end it. Since my players have 2+ characters each, if one party dies, the second party will hunt for the bodies to double their treasure! (And considering that treasure = exp, that's pretty much an automatic level.)
Yeah, I'd give out exp. I'd also include exp from treasure, even though they don't get to keep the imaginary treasure. (unless they have it in the next dream combat, hmm...)
