    [DM Question] Roll-Play or Role-Play

Heck no. Although, I do play in a 3.5 game where the DM required a climb check to get over a six foot fence. I thought requiring a roll was pretty dumb, but his game, his call. This codifying of the rules is definitely not necessary to play D&D, and a lot of the older editions encourage you...

    No Random treasure !?!?...

I really cracked up when I read that. This new game is hilarious, but it's definitely not for me!

How were you first introduced to D&D?

After reading over the posts in this thread so far, I'd say you're pretty far from the mark. I started with the 1991 Black Box. I "read the rules" and invited my friends over to play. Did we play with 100% of the rules as written in the book? Heck no! And as time passed, we grabbed rules...

    Gaming at LGGC IV

Wish I was going. It sounds like the place to be. Have fun storming the castle!

    Gnoll time!

Glad to have helped. Sounds like a great adventure. Are the PCs still trapped within the cavern? I hope they brought rations!

    Gnoll time!

Hah-hah! I'll similarly offer advice for the wrong edition, although there's probably not much difference between 1st and 2nd edition AD&D. In 1st edition, dragonnes speak Brass Dragon and Sphinx, and gnolls speak gnoll, chaotic evil, troll, hobgoblin, and orc, so the two probably won't be...

Did you retire characters at name level?

I answered "rarely, if ever." Name level adds a whole new dimension to the game: clearing land for your stronghold, making moves for political power, starting wars. That was some really fun stuff, especially if several PCs teamed up and all marched on a common foe. In general, we usually...

    Fight On! Magazine

You can find The House of Rogat Demazien here too: http://www.judgesguild.com/fans/rogat_demazien.pdf Great stuff all around and very inspiring for the novice dungeon designer. Thanks a bunch, Melan!

    Fight On! Magazine

All big names in today's "OD&D scene" to be sure. I'm really looking forward to seeing the magazine. Unfortunately, my copy is still in Lulu's "FULFILLING" stage. I wait with bated breath. Chances are it will find a home somewhere within my megadungeon as well. Agreed. A big part of my...

    Fight On! Magazine

Ho. Lee. Cow. (mad dash to grab credit card...) EDIT: Purchased. To be honest, all you had to do was put the words "four FULL adventures" and "Gabor Lux" in the same sentence. Is this the actual table of contents? If so, this is incredibly sweet.

    D&D 4E Should 4e convert to metric?

Down with the metric system! We don't want no foreign rulers! One fluid ounce of water weighs one ounce, and 100 F is about human body temperature, so nyah. In all seriousness, if I were from another country, I'd just say a square is a meter, 2 lbs is a kg, and 2 F is 1 C. So my 2000...

    Seeking Hindi/Indian Adventures For Inspiration...

It's not quite Hindi/Indian, but Empire of the Petal Throne has a lot of influences from that part of the world. You can find some handy-dandy links for that game at the OD&D discussion boards, located here: http://www.odd74.proboards76.com/v45index.cgi?board=ept&action=display&thread=609...

Chris Pramas' blog from 3/25: Husker Dungeons

To keep with the idea of taking wisdom from lyrics/quotations, think about this one: “…for everything herein is fantastic, and the best way is to decide how you would like it to be, and then make it just that way!” Not great advice for a designer trying to make a buck, but when it comes to...

What were the problems with 2nd ed?

I don't completely agree with you here because I think D&D works fine with no skill system. But the problem was the tacked-on system of NWPs. They were just miserable, only half were useful, and they could have just been replaced with character background + ability check. You are dead on...

What were the problems with 2nd ed?

Right off the bat, I want to say that I don't currently play 2nd edition AD&D, and it was never my D&D of choice, but some of the comments above need to be addressed. Cute response, but in practice, THAC0 works out pretty much the same as BAB. Don't get me wrong, BAB is more elegant and is...

How often do you use traps?

I run dungeon crawls pretty much exclusively, so I'd guesstimate the PCs run into at least one trap in every 3 out of 4 sessions. I also count as traps situations where taking the treasure activates the golem of doom or waving your fanny at the chained-up spider results in the chain snapping.

Will we ever see AD&D Third Edition

I don't agree with you on this one. I would say that the closest system to 3e D&D is RC D&D. Sure, WoTC separated races from classes in 3e, but the RC general skills -- including the level progression for receiving them -- are very similar to feats. The mechanics for some, like acrobatics...

Will we ever see AD&D Third Edition

This isn't exactly what you were asking for, but there's a thread on dragonsfoot (http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22014) discussing TSR's plans to release a 3rd edition AD&D before they went bottom up. According the Ryan Dancey, the plans were to move the next edition away...
