BECMI vs Rules Cyclopedia vs Castles & Crusades

Those are both excellent suggestions for launching a C&C campaign. Personally, I would start (and have started) a campaign with the Beacon of Enon Tor, available here: tower.newcenturycomputers.net/temp/beacon.pdf It's a short expedition to a wizard's tower that will probably involve only one...

BECMI vs Rules Cyclopedia vs Castles & Crusades

There have been a lot of good suggestions in this thread. My two cents is this: the RC is challenging to start with. There's a lot of material in there and not a lot of context for people who are not familiar with D&D. There's too much emphasis on high-level play for a beginner, and the...

    CnC Houserules

I agree with this 100%. C&C is a perfectly fun game when it's run straight out of the box, but if you have the time and the desire, you can mold it into the perfect game for your group, and that's where the game really shines. A nice side effect if this malleability is that practically any D&D...

    CnC Houserules

C&C didn't have enough of the flavor I was looking for, so I made some substantial changes. Now I'm gearing up to run a heavily house-ruled C&C game based on RC D&D and original D&D. Players can choose from four races (dwarf, elf, halfling, human) and six classes (fighter, magic-user, cleric...

    Balrog?

I know this is an old thread, but if anyone tries to google this information in the future, the Greyhawk Supplement lists a Balrog's number of attacks as 2: 1-12 by sword, and 2-12, 3-18, or 4-24 according to size..

    Poster Maps in Adventures?

Ah, I guess I didn't read the news too carefully; I assumed that all three adventures included poster battle maps. H1 is described specifically as a poster battle map, but H2 and H3 may not be. I wonder if they are -- to use your terminology -- poster maps or poster battle maps.

    Poster Maps in Adventures?

I guess I haven't been paying much attention to the 4th edition buzz, but reading the news page here, I noticed this: "Keep on the Shadowfell is an exciting Dungeons & Dragons adventure designed for characters of levels 1-3. It includes three double-sided poster maps suitable for use with D&D...

    Who has made D&D great?

That's a solid list. Bob Bledsaw and Paul Jaquays would not have occured to me, but their contributions cannot be denied. And to all of these guys - thanks for a helluva game, fellas.

Which version of D&D for young children?

Other boardgames to check out are HeroQuest and Dragon Strike. But if you are set on D&D, I'd recommend the 1991 Black Box set. It takes PCs up to level five with the Mentzer rules, after which you are expected to continue with the Rules Cyclopedia. It also comes with a board/map and a...

To ALL ENWorlders: Did you play 1E AD&D?

Heck yes. My last character was a bard. Boy did I get screwed when we converted to 2nd edition!

    OD&D or RC?

Here's a link to Greg Svenson's page. He played in Dave Arneson's original game and has some neat stories there. http://home.tampabay.rr.com/gsvenson/svenny.html

    OD&D or RC?

I found myself in your exact situation a couple months ago. I was sure that I wanted to run a back-to-the-basics D&D campaign, but I wasn't sure what system to run it with. So I read through the original 3LB, Moldvay B/X, and RCD&D. In the end I chose the RC because I wanted to try to keep...

    History of D&D speech

Here's a firsthand account of part of the original Blackmoor game, written by Greg Svenson, one of Dave Arneson's players: http://home.tampabay.rr.com/gsvenson/svenny.html Dave Arneson's site also has a few articles about the history of roleplaying...

POLL: Would you play D&D without a Skill System?

Perfect consistency is far from necessary in my book. Not every language is as easy to decipher, not every knot is as easy to tie, and not every town guard is as easy to trick. It's the referee's job to assess the situation and come up with a reasonable response. No memorization required! As...

POLL: Would you play D&D without a Skill System?

Even if one were to concede that Mr. Foster's example is nothing more than a model of a written-down skill system, it comes with several advantages over such a system. One, no flipping through books to find target DC's, lists of synergies, or modifiers. And two, no substantial amount of time...

Whenever they fail a morale check. Next question.

    Giving C&C another look

That's an interesting point. Let me add that in addition to being a middle ground between AD&D and D&D 3.x, I think C&C also fills a niche between the simplicity of Classic (Moldvay or Mentzer) D&D and the greater options available in AD&D. You get a two-tiered alignment system, race separate...

Recommendations needed for a new system for an Old DM

You might be interested in Castles and Crusades by Troll Lord Games. It feels a lot like first edition AD&D but plays with a more modern mechanic. Combat runs quickly and intuitively, and it's immediately combatible with any pre-WoTC D&D stuff you already have. There are a few posters on the...

power level of C&C versus D&D 3rd edition?

I can see your point, but in my book an opposed roll requires two dice to be thrown, like a grapple check in C&C. Actually, I did not know that I should have added the thief's dexterity modifier to the the CL for the guard's wisdom check. That's a good rule.
