Level Up (A5E) My Zeitgeist supernatural investigators game

Ryan Nook wrote the adventure paths, War of the Burning Sky and Zeitgeist. Ranger Wickett wrote the campaign book Zeitgeist. Wickett might have done some writing on the adventure paths too. Not sure. Both the adventure paths are amazing and my favourites.

Level Up (A5E) My Zeitgeist supernatural investigators game

Well the serial killer turned out to be a fairly powerful ghoul. My character's aunt was saved by the charlatans. The charlatans were using a Changeling like critter to pose as dead husband. We actually ended up swaying him over to our side and he helped bring down charlatans. GM wasn't...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

I play a variety of games from Brindlewood Bay to A5e. I enjoy OSR games because of the simpler rulesets and character creation. There's a bubbling over of really creative ideas coming from the OSR. I love the zines that get us many many hours of play from a booklet. Just going through the...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

Nope. Danger should be telegraphed so players can make informed decisions. Gotchas are seriously frowned on in most OSR circles these days. I hated the paranoid play that was too common back in the day. These days a well designed OSR dungeon is fun, challenging and will contain factions or...

The One Ring & Lord of the Rings RPG New Starter Sets Announced

We enjoyed the Shire adventures. It is, after all, where "The Fellowship of the Ring" starts.

D&D 5E (2024) Wargamer Takes Shot At WotC for Not Respecting Forgotten Realms Canon.

How long do you have to wait before you get to actually fly around on your purple dragon? Is this dragon going to initially behave like a large purple wolf buddy, then fly with you for one round? Then at a really high level, you get the full fantasy of riding a dragon? I wonder if WotC will...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

True, but the philosophy of how 5e is created often, (not always) leans into a more story focussed adventure. And that's great too. I ran several PF adventure paths. But because of the strength of 5e characters and the many more powers they have, the adventures often feel different. Combat is...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

Sneak. Negotiate. Bluff. Avoid. Scary monsters beyond the group's capabilities are usually obvious. Set things up to give your group an edge. I've been playing a lot of OSR games lately. We are not churning through character sheets because we play smart and cautious. In a modern style OSR...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

OSR is a problematic term because it has splintered into groups that do not always get along. The purists believie OSR is D&D retroclones only. Others include old non-D&D games, like Traveller. A large group has "evolved" old school play, which we see in Gavin Norman's adventure design...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

In 5e, leaping in aggressively is often the smart choice. There is an expectation that encounters are balanced. 5e has more safety nets with healing and moving away from lingering consequences. This is why many (not all) players struggle when they switch to an old school game.

Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

Just how it goes. There's a ton of novelists, movie makers, painters, etc. who work hard, create amazing pieces and remain in obscurity. You just can't enter creative fields assuming financial success. Work hard, do what you love creatively, and you'll be happy, even if all you make off it is...

D&D General Why Combat is a Fail State - Blog and Thoughts

This was common back in the day, unfortunately, which is why I disliked D&D. It totally flies in the face of the modern OSR philosophy, however. Modern OSR play encourages GMs to telegraph danger so that players can make informed decisions. Dungeons should have multiple entrances and loops...

Do you buy new versions of TTRPG games when you haven't had time to play the older version sitting on your shelf?

No! Never! That would be a waste. OK, maybe this happened a few times. 😅

Shadowdark: Western Reaches Live Stream AMA

Kelsey said that future Cursed Scrolls would not be based on the Western Reaches. She also shared that she doesn't use turn order initiative much in her home games, but does use it at conventions. She went into greater detail about the overlap in the campaign setting and Cursed Scrolls...

Shadowdark Setting Looks Set To Be 2025's First Million Dollar TTRPG Crowdfunder

I love SD. Definitely not discounted grognard, as I never liked D&D much, back in the day. It's not really grimdark edge stuff, and is actually focused more on exploration over meat grinder. It can be very dangerous, but smart, careful play alleviates much of its reputation for "disposable"...
