D&D General How important is leveling to the play experience (lvls 2-8)?

When I was playing 3E the low teen levels was when it all came together. Of course, multi-classing was rampant and 2-3 classes plus a prestige class was the norm. Rock on the Ftr 2 / Kt 2 / Paladin 4 / Divine Crusader, the Ftr 4 / Mk (you'd be surprised how many Monk abilities work in armour)...

D&D 5E (2014) Exhaustion for old 1e undead level drain

If an adventure depends upon the use of a particular spell, make sure you provide that spell on a scroll or other device within the adventure. Preferably more than once.

    D&D 5E (2014) Darts - and D&D

Tod Cutler (weapon-maker) and Matt Easton (HEMA tutor) are playing with darts. So, 1d3 + Str for the small ones (plumbata), d4 for the medium ones, and d6 for the big ones? And roll damage with Disadvantage if the target wears metal armour?

D&D 5E (2014) Exhaustion for old 1e undead level drain

Not really. It was more the fighter types going in first. Either entering the room / crypt / whatever or - being strong - lifting the sarcophagus lid or seal or breaking the door etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Exhaustion for old 1e undead level drain

The problem as I remember it back then was that it disproportionately affected the front line. By the time you found that you were dealing with something that drained levels the fighters had lost a level or two while the spellcasters had not. That was okay in a one-shot horror game but in an...

D&D 5E (2014) Exhaustion for old 1e undead level drain

Count me in the 'level drain is un-fun' category. At least in a long-term game. A one-shot horror is a different matter. For me, part of the problem is that short-range effects affect martial characters the most and you don't want to punish players for doing their thing. Fighters fight, so...

Huge collection of RPG books for sale

I'm sorry to disappoint you but that's really rather a modest collection. :) Anyway, good luck with the sale, but you might want to check the prices you're asking for some of those. For instance, I rather suspect the Hero System products are underpriced.

    D&D 5E (2014) At Higher Levels (Upcasting)

I think part of the problem is that there are already spells which are upcast versions of lower-level spells. Think Change Self / Alter Self / Polymorph / Shapechange or Flame Bolt / Fireball / Meteor Swarm or Fireball / Incendiary Cloud or Wind Wall / Wall of Ice / Wall of Stone / Wall of Force...

D&D 5E (2014) Why the disparity in hit dice between classes? between classes vs. creatures?

In various editions there was the Potion of Heroism. This added up to 4d10. There was also a Potion of Super-heroism too. As for HP, try this: everyone rolls d6 plus Con bonus, but clerics add an extra +2 per level, fighters add an extra +4 per level, and barbarians add and extra +6 per level.

D&D 5E (2014) Suggestions for fun 2-level dip after 10 levels of Battlemaster Fighter?

Again, it seems to me that you want a class other than Fighter. Take the Martial Adept feat for the BM manoeuvres.

D&D 5E (2014) Elves As the Ancient Evil?

This is also in Dragonlance, only it was the ogres who eliminated themselves, devolving into cruder forms, with the remaining good ones (the Irda) fleeing to a hidden isle. But I too dig the Valheru. You could perhaps have them as warlock patrons, as Ashen-Shugar was to Tomas.

D&D 5E (2014) Suggestions for fun 2-level dip after 10 levels of Battlemaster Fighter?

Does not compute. That's a major, major, debuff. You're also losing the feat at level 12. If what you're after are the BM's manoeuvres then consider taking another class and the Martial Adept feat (possibly more than once if your GM allows it). Paladin and Warlock (PoB) are two very different...

    D&D 5E (2014) Avoiding Explosions in a Tiny Hut

Remember that if the party becomes known for this then recurring enemies will use this knowledge to their advantage. Perhaps the trap is an Anti Magic Shell which cancels the Hut and also a Wall of Force holding back acid or whatever.
