D&D 5E (2014) Hypothetical Revised PHB: What Subclasses Makes the Cut?

For the fighter, ditch the Eldritch Knight. You can already do it in three ways: by being a fighter and taking the Magical Adept and Ritual Caster feats or by being a wizard and taking the various Armour Proficiency feats or by multiclassing.

D&D 5E (2014) Guild Artisans are boring. Be an independent winemaker instead.

Historically, guilds were very localised. For example the Worshipful Companies of the City of London, the Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen, and the Schuola of Venice. They had widespread contacts, of course, and a Fishmonger from London could expect hospitality from the Schuola di Pescatori in...

D&D General Is this a fair trap?

Doesn't matter. The question you need to ask yourself is, "Is it fun?" Does it add to the players' enjoyment of the adventure?

D&D 5E (2014) Dnd World Demographics Excel Tool - Rarity of Classes and Spells

For progression, I would assume a large die-off in the earlier levels but after a point it would be progressively more likely to survive to reach the next level. A 12th level mage is very likely to become an archmage if she can live long enough. But if I need an NPC to be a 13th level paladin...

D&D 5E (2014) Would Allowing Multiple Reactions Break The Game?

Try giving out an item that gives one extra reaction. My rewrite of the fighter gives one extra reaction at level 6 in place of the feat / ASI. Or an extra Bonus Action.

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour - (Updated 27July2025)

You foreshadowed this earlier. I was half-expecting the PCs to refuse en bloc. The ramifications of that action might have shaken the heavens.

    Sounds fantastic; go for it!

    D&D 5E (2014) Monster's body as a dungeon

IIRC there's a Dungeon adventure where the 'dungeon' is the innards of a huge construct. Also somewhat similar is a Dungeon adventure where there's a castle on the back of a (living) monster.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Jar: is it a pc spell?(update 2, the continuing saga - how it's working for my character)

If the other players are willing you could MJ their PCs and use movement magic like Dimension Door to move a combat type close to the BBEG then return to your MJ. And who's going to expect the Barbarian to cast Fireball? In a social adventure you could MJ a hapless valet or maid and go to...

D&D 5E (2014) How To Do A Human Shield Grapple

This seems to me to be the perfect opportunity for a Bonus Action manoeuvre. After a successful Grapple you may use a Bonus Action to make an opposed Strength check to position the creature you have grappled.

D&D 5E (2014) Balancing Mummy Lord fight with CR

Rather than spending so much effort trying to nerf the players, why not let them be awesome and just give the mummy lots of extra HP?

D&D 5E (2014) Balancing Mummy Lord fight with CR

Rather than making the gold armour grant fire resistance, how about making the gold armour the treasure they're there to find? So now they cannot use fire magic because that would melt the gold. Make some mook earlier have gold armour which succumbs to fire. That must have pretty much maxxed...

D&D 5E (2014) My House Rules for My Homebrew Campaign (Feedback Welcome)

This defeats one of the main non-combat uses of Action Surge. Say the Fighter is trying to grab someone in a river before they go over a waterfall. They fail the first roll. Action Surge gives them another attempt and thus a roll. But by your rule it auto-fails. This ruins the Diviner wizard's...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dragon dreams?

Take a look at Glorantha: any dragon encountered is the embodiment of a dream of a real dragon. Real dragons can devastate nations on their own.

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D5e Dropping to 0 HP Alt Rules

Ask yourself this question: faced with such penalties, why would I want to play a frontline PC? Your system disadvantages the front line considerably. An unlucky hit can take anyone down and then you're out for at least 3 rounds without outside intervention and even if you do get help you're...
