D&D General What is YOUR GM style?

I run what could be called a permissive yet oddly restrictive game... Player agency is important, as DM I'm simply the arbiter of the world, so I do my best to adjudicate their choices without bias or vested interest in an outcome. That said - I keep tight control over the parameters...

D&D 5E (2014) What is your least favorite class in 5E?

When I was prepping my 5e 'Hardcore Old School' mode, I wanted to nerf this. The idea that Wizards have full control over what they choose without drawback is the main bone of contention. In old school games they had to roll to learn their magic, and failure meant you couldn't learn those...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

1e Mini-session. Kyla the 3rd level Kensai, whose level-challenge duel was still pending, cannot make the regular session this week so we resolved her duel in a mini session to see if she keeps her level or reverts to 2. For those unfamiliar - 1st Ed Kensai have a 10% per level of being...

D&D 5E (2014) (Poll) I play 5e, and there are X players at the table.

    It's online, but I've started a 5e campaign and have 6 players.

D&D General What is your favorite Class?

I am usually the DM, but occasionally do get to actually sit and play as a PC... so my choices across the editions. Basic D&D where I cut my teeth - I like the fighter. Straight up had the most fun with fighters back in the day when we played that system. 1st ed AD&D: I lean towards Rangers as...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's really useful on a DM screen?

I bought a 'blank' DM screen so I could put custo panels for my 1e game, it has things like encounter reactions, morale adjustments, Weapon type vs AC. Things I use but (at the time) hadn't quite memorized. I have the 5e screen that came with the box set, which I find handy as I'm not as well...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

Chaos in the Forgotten Realms as my 1e group went treasure hunting. Following the clues on a treasure map, they search the area they believe hides the hoard. They come across an ogre that is keen to join them and become an adventurer, but leaving the conversation to the uncharismatic dwarf...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fix 5e.... in one sentence

Intelligence: For each point of modifier, the character may add (or subtract for penalty) one additional Skill from their class options, or a Tool or Language.

D&D 5E (2014) What XP to award for defeating DMPCs?

If a PC beheads a DMPC, they should be able to absorb their quickening and take over as DM. But seriously though... I think most players might be thrown off by DMs using PC classes as enemies more often than not. The massive variety of options mean you can't really predict abilities as much...

    D&D General Aging Characters

Certainly there was a time back in the day when we handwaived time passage... but as I got older and grumpier I found that I preferred more exact time-keeping in my games. I adhere closely to character ages and the aging categories in my 1e game, it's not arbitrary so players don't get to...

    Simultaneous Initiative (Adapted from Chainmail)

Simultaneous results are easy to adjudicate in older editions, and they generally have that covered in the rules. 1e for instance simply has you resolve all actions regardless of the outcomes... so it's possible to skewer one another and both die for instance. I don't think adjudicating them in...

D&D General How crunchy vs casual do you like your D&D?

I guess crunch and casual mixed, if I have to vote from those selections... I like detail and 'crunch' in the general aspects of the game - for instance in my 1e game I use all sort of fun stuff like disease checks, morale rolls for monsters with all the various modifiers, Sage rules...

D&D General Is D&D nostalgia the best nostalgia of them all?

I am sort of the opposite these days. While I have some fond memories of playing back in the 80s and 90s, learning the game and having fun with friends - I also have a ton of crappy memories of games gone wrong. (one that ended up with 16 year old me throwing a fit and literally assaulting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D combat fun?

DMG pg 84 suggests that the typical group should be able to handle 6-8 encounters medium or hard encounters per day before taking a long rest. While not a hard and fast rule per se, it's a parameter that's clearly laid out. I shall return to the shadows now, lurking and observing with my popcorn.

D&D 5E (2014) Temple of Elemental Evil is the next Original Adventures Reincarnated

Toronto stores received theirs on Tuesday, I went down and got my copy. It went straight to the shelf where it will likely not see play for a very long time, but at least the collection looks all purty and complete!:cry:

    D&D General Time in RPGs

For dungeon crawling, I use a tally counter and click off the rounds and turns they spend, noting the count where they light torches or spells are cast etc. Random encounters in the dungeon occur based on the appropriate frequency of the encounter for the dungeon. For date keeping, I have a...

D&D General How Was Your Last Session?

1e Continues... The team had spent a few weeks training, where everyone made level 2, and one made level 3. Royal proclamation indicated that the area where they'd buried the 750lbs of electrum was now off limits until further notice, and despite the Chaotics in the group insisting that they...

    AD&D 1E Common House Rules for AD&D?

The most common house rule I've ever seen is something to boost 1st level hit points. Either just starting with Maximum, or some kind of double roll, or weird algorithm. I have only ever played one game where it was a straight roll and you kept what you got. For my own part, I have a list of...
