    D&D 5E (2014) What are your 5e houserules

I may have gone a little overboard on my brainstorm of house rules when starting my 5e game, but the game has been running for 7 months now and so far so good. I am monitoring the practicality and play value. The intent is a more pared back and challenging game with an old school feel. PHB...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

Gotcha. I certainly don't want to come off as attacking you personally. The bug in my craw about fudging the game comes from my experience with Adversarial DMs, and more commonly: self-proclaimed 'storytellers' who will see the players through their scenarios come hell or high water! I simply...

D&D 5E (2014) Tasha or xanathar's, choose one and why do you like it?

Xanathar's for me. I flipped through Tasha's and wasn't impressed.

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

Based on what I've read of your posts, I never would have assumed that you did... but... ...this is where our philosophies diverge, I will let that TPK happen if that's where the players' choices and the dice have taken things. To me and my players that's simply part of the game. One of my...

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

Funny story - my 1e game went online for a bit through January and February, so I had to input 4 dungeon levels into Roll20. The group goes in, gets trounced, retreats and heals. Goes back in, gets trounced... rinse and repeat. Until finally, they decide they can't beat this dungeon, but do find...

D&D 5E (2014) DMs, how do you fudge?

Unless the fudge is made with maple, it doesn't come to my table. Mmm... maple... 🤤

D&D General How do players feel about DM fudging?

I hate it. I will leave a game. I HAVE left games. I want a DM to adjudicate the game fairly, the fun will take care of itself. Roll out in the open* where everyone can see, let the dice land where they will. That's the game part of it. Not completing a scenario because the dice crapped out...

OSR I never should have picked up Old School Essentials…

Yes, yes, and more yes. I am finding myself in the same boat. I started out with BASIC and quickly moved on to other games. 2e was my maintsay for a long time before switching over to 1e. Recently on a whim I sat in on an OSE game, and it has been the most fun time as a player I have had in...

AD&D 1E The TRUE Dungeon Master

Wrong. The Mentzer DM is clearly the AD&D DM's evil twin, as evidenced by the goatee! Which means that AD&D must therefore be the 'good' edition! Pictures don't lie! Thank you! Thank you for providing the proof of what I've always suspected.

OSR Old School Essentials Box Sets Kickstarter

We're in the home stretch now. Exciting! I actually joined a game running OSE last month the week this launched, and my enthusiasm for the pared back style of B/X has certainly been increased. I loves me some AD&D, but there's something to be said for the simple approach.

D&D 5E (2014) Name a technique or design choice that your group enjoys, but that is generally unpopular.

The idea is basically a port over from 1st edition - a wizard (and other arcane casters who study magic) must make a check to know. (Where in 1e it's a % based on intellect). For 5e I make the DC 12 + spell level. (Cantrips count as level 0) They add intellect modifier plus proficiency bonus...

D&D 5E (2014) Name a technique or design choice that your group enjoys, but that is generally unpopular.

You monster! How DARE you make your players do... resource management?!? On the note of Monstrous DMing... I make my 5e players: Roll 3d6 for stats. Roll straight up HP, no taking the average. Only apply CON bonuses at level 1, not per level. Limit Cantrip castings. Slow down natural...

AD&D 2E 2e Fighter vs Fighter/Thief vs Thief Play Balance

It's not so much that they have 'purpose' as it's a more intuitive way of handling the ability mechanically. As for multiclassing, yes, multiclassing yields some great options. There are drawbacks too, which you need to let play out. But single class, or multiclass are both valid options for...

AD&D 2E 2e Fighter vs Fighter/Thief vs Thief Play Balance

Absolutely, no argument on the issue of clarity. o_O I loves me some old school (especially 1e) but damn they could have hired better editors. Elven and Halfling thieves do definitely rule on the stealth front. 🥷

    Old solo adventures?

Yeah, basically. It was a choose your own adventure with numbered passages. You read the passage based on the choice you make. Dice for encounters within the rules of D&D modified by the module for solo play.
