Peregrine’s Nest: Our Brilliant Ruin Review (Studio Hermitage)

Full Disclosure: One of the senior writers for Our Brilliant Ruin is a friend of mine. You can read my previous interview with the Studio Hermitage crew and an upcoming Not DND TTRPG Interview on EN World’s YouTube channel on September 30. The Setting Our Brilliant Ruin is a standalone...

    Peregrine's Nest: Who Goes First?

Let's take a look at a few examples of "who goes first" in other games and how you might adapt them to yours. Picture courtesy of Pixabay. Initiative: D&D This is the standard we are all accustomed to. You have an initiative bonus based on (usually) Dexterity and you apply it to a roll to get...

Peregrine's Nest: Gaming with Strangers, Part 2

GMs are always wanted at cons, but, a con game can be a very different experience Picture courtesy of AugusteBlanqui - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=74768497 Even if you have run games for years, running a game at a convention can be a very different...

Peregrine's Nest: Gaming with Strangers, Part 1

I do agree pace is important, but some of the most fun parts have been roleplaying with Npcs. Ideally your game should be all ‘good bits’ so pace is good but no need to rush.

Peregrine's Nest: Gaming with Strangers, Part 1

Maid is one of the 'one or two exceptions' I was thinking of. :) Very quick and easy and part of the fun. The other was Nobilis (although that GM had the character parts done, just let us arrange the main 4 stats)

Peregrine's Nest: Your Convention Survival Guide

You’ve decided to go a convention! Here's some advice on how to get the most out of the con you pick. Picture courtesy of Unsplash. Be Prepared, Take Care Convention season is upon us, and there are both large and small gaming cons all over the place. If you’ve never been to one they are...

    Peregrine's Nest: Before Their Time

Continuum was both complex and interesting, which might be why it didn’t do so well :) I think in the UK it suffered by calling the PCs (who travelled the timespan) “spanners”. To be honest, if you republished it now as the Loki Time Variance Agency rpg it would probably have a renaissance.

    Peregrine's Nest: Before Their Time

Both Flabergasted (basically the Tintin rpg) and Agents are Modiphius 3rd party games. So just one place to look. :) While Flabbergasted has been slow to do more stuff there are some new things since release so I’d be optimistic it’s time isn’t over yet. :)

    Peregrine's Nest: Before Their Time

I’d agree with most of those, but while I’d happily see more In Nomine it had a pretty healthy series of supplements that covered pretty much everything.

    Peregrine's Nest: Before Their Time

There were both too short lived, although Agents is a third party for Modiphius so the writers may be planning more. Luckily this year or so there is a bonanza of Victorian style RPGs that may ease your pain - Candela Obscura (Darlington), Our Brilliant Ruin (Studio Hermitage), Victoriana...

    Peregrine's Nest: Before Their Time

After the two second edition supplements, none of the books have any new Miles Teves art apart from the cover on the third.

    Peregrine's Nest: Before Their Time

Well, that is just a rules upgrade rather than adds any new setting or story as far as I know.

    Peregrine's Nest: Before Their Time

Not every game gets the supplements or line it deserves. It is sadly not that rare for a great game to fall victim to the loss of a company, creatives falling out or simply bad luck. While there are plenty of games you would like more supplements for, and every corebook should let you play the...

    Space: 1999 Coming From Modiphius

I missed this one or I'd have jumped in earlier! I'm the writer behind this one, and yes there is a certain element of labour of love as Space 1999 is something I loved as a child (even though it was also terrifying). But having rewatched it all again recently it still stands up, and in some...

Peregrine's Nest: What Does a Line Developer Do?

Not much beyond the usual. Mail companies of the games you love and ask who to talk to about writing for them. Asking the same at a con is also good as that person might be there to chat to. Basically, build a connection and hopefully you’ll hit someone at the right time and they may have...

Peregrine's Nest: What Does a Line Developer Do?

For a line its basically the same, you just do more books! :) Actually its a little easier as you can look towards the next books and build on what you already planned on the previous ones. I think doing it by line rather than by book is much better in general but you can't always find someone...

Peregrine's Nest: What Does a Line Developer Do?

Depends how that all runs and how much is being done. Sometimes on an established line there isn't really much that needs doing (if you have the experience to spot potential issues). A new game will need a lot and you do as much as you can. If you are lucky the company has a team, otherwise it...

Peregrine's Nest: What Does a Line Developer Do?

In role-playing game production the role of a Line Developer appears self-explanatory, but few people really know exactly what it entails. Sure, you clearly ‘develop the game line’, but what does that really mean? Picture courtesy of Pixabay. I’ve been lucky enough to be a Line Developer...
