    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Your PC's name and their "true name" are very unlikely to be the same. A "true name" is a word that perfectly describes the nature of the named creature, not the name your parents gave you. Edit: Looks like Gate doesn't require a true name. That's a definite bonus to the spell.

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

MMM: Thanks! I'll fix that up. (edit: As for 99.9% - also keep in mind they need to find out where the mansion is in order to open a gate there. Not an easy proposition even if they have the gate spell) Plane Shift: That was my original assumption too, until I read the Plane Shift...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I changed my Forcecage rating yesterday. It is currently blue. My original rating was based on the mistaken assumption the material cost was per casting. As for hold person, yes, with a failed save, an applicable target is super-screwed for a round. With each additional failed save, screwed...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Here's my 2c on the discussion (not that it was asked for, but I'll give it anyway) I've been roleplaying 1-2/week for about 34 years now. That's lots of campaigns, lots of groups, lots of DM's, lots of different systems. There are patterns that occur in scenarios that have consistently...

No problem. Didn't know it was a rule, it won't happen again.

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I apologize to anyone who's posts I miss, there really is quite a bit to respond to. I'm going to do my best. I did promise to respond to the rest of this detailed post... They can indeed by quite powerful when they are applicable and they stick. However, lots of spells can be powerful, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Tongue is firmly planted to cheek, pretty much permanently. Seriously though, the term "waste of space" is absolutely not targeted at the player or the reader. It's targeted at a fictional character. I wouldn't even call a real person a "waste of space" as a joke. Finally, I should clarify...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Thank you for the responses! My "orange" rating warns against spells that are circumstantial. I agree it is a good spell against the creatures it works against. I prefer selecting spells that have broader use (and thus recommend them). I mostly agree (exception: I still think counterspell is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I'll go out of order and start with 2: I'm of mixed opinion how formidable a tank using Vampiric touch is going to be for a number of reasons, but whether it makes you a good tank or not is irrelevant to my guide, as tanking is not a tactic the guide is built for. 1) OK, so you are casting a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

Thanks for response: Command Undead: Good catch, I'll make the correction Illusory Reality: I just read it again, I'm pretty sure you can cast Silent Image, use your bonus action to make the wall "real", and then drop the silent image - no concentration required Grim Harvest: My opinion is...

I'm sorry you were offended. I will enjoy sharing with friends though, that I was accused of arrogance by someone with the screen name "Sacrosanct"

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

I wouldn't. There just aren't any good cantrips that do damage and grant a save. With poison spray you have a 10 foot range, with Acid Splash you have poor damage. If there is a creature with a high AC, and you want to avoid to hit rolls, you have other options that involve the use of better...

Blue: Yes, I wasn't thinking of point buy. So far, every group I've played in has used the stat array. Fair point. Variant Human: I meant that this edition of the human is...naw, you got me. Corrected... PnPgamer: Thanks for providing it

PnPgamer: Rereading, I agree about Portent and have changed the rating and comments HarrisonF: Good point of Phantasmal Force, I've reconsidered my rating and comments Leatherhead: I would argue its very easy to touch fog.

So yeah, I've totally started a YouTube channel. First video is spell evaluation of course. Next 9 will also be spell evaluation (one for each level of spells and cantrips). Hope you'll check it out! Treantmonk's Temple I've completed a Wizard Guide for those interested. Hopefully some of...

    Too Many Casters?

The most powerful party I ever played in was in a 3.5 campaign and the party members were a Wizard (summoner), a Cleric(healer/buffer) and a Beguiler(enchanter). Casters are generally tougher than non casters, so (generally speaking) the more the better. Here's a more objective point: non...

    Do Bards still suck?

Wow - what a great resource! Well thought out and written! ;) Bards got TONS of love in Pathfinder. 1) Bardic Music is much better. It is now a free action to maintain, so a Bard can inspire courage while attacking or casting spells. By 7th level it's a move action to initiate which means...
