I lean toward thalmin's position on this. I wouldn't want to see any scores drop below 8. Nor would I want to see a player take a -1 in their character's lowest four scores.

A couple of the players prefer very straight forward characters, without a lot of options to think about, especially options at character creation (which they don't enjoy as much as playing the game). Forcing them to pick a feat wouldn't be fun for them.

Personally, I'm pleased with the 5E release schedule and 5E as a whole. And, I do like the idea of just one or two adventure paths a year with a player's companion to go with them. I like this model, a lot. I wouldn't mind a Monster Manual 2, a Fiend Folio, or a Player's Handbook 2. But...

It sounds to me that there's something about being magically enlarged that isn't the same as being naturally a larger size. Perhaps, a 2nd level slot isn't really powerful enough to fully duplicate the effects of changing to a larger size. Maybe the mass isn't effectively duplicated? Maybe...
