Reading & Running old D&D adventure/delves... Am I missing something?

As others have already noted, you didn't pick the easiest adventures. :) Time to push my old favourite, which was the adventure I started with 30 years ago: N1: Against the Cult of the Reptile God. Yes, that's the old way. There were even more extreme cases ("here's the dungeon, go with it")...

If you were paid to be a GM

The price would have to be even higher for a weekend occasion. The time I'd spend on the job would have to contest with time spend with the family, and don't forget prep time under the week as well.

Clothing styles or items you wish would come back

Oh no! You've got it all wrong! Hats seem to be on the rise again. Of some 20 software testers working for the company within the last two year, 5 wore hats regularly, 2 even within the building. I love the idea of strolling around with hat and coat, but - alas! - my small head makes getting a...

    Help Me Find a System

+1 for GURPS, perhaps with the GURPS Dungeon Fanatsy line thrown in. You just have to make sure that the starting characters are below the ususal point level, avoid some crass optimization, and be very reluctant with awarding CPs over the long run. This has me scratching my head. I played...

D&D 5E (2014) Will your monsters roll for damage, or have set damage?

Rolling for damage, here. The fixed damage for minions in 4e is something which really irks me. From a DM point of view it makes combats too predictable, removing an element of suspense. While using fixed damage for masses is a good idea, I generally don't use hordes of monsters anyway.

Legends & Lore: Experience Points and Levels

Both "Masks" and "The Enemy Within", which predate the Adventure Path idea, still have problems with the junctions. Sometimes the players need to get a certain clue to proceed which can be troublsome to provide them with. "The Enemy Within" does, IMHO, a better job: the players acquire a river...

D&D 5E (2014) Things that make you want to buy 5E

Curiosity I don't see me running a 5e campaign in the (near) future. Curiosity will cause me to buy and read the first item(s) of the product line. Will it bring something new to the game which isn't offered with any of the older versions?

If you were paid to be a GM

The question isn't as easy to answer as it looks like. When I'd ask/accept money for running a game, I would treat it as a job. As such it has to be able to support me. For a one-shot (2 hours prep, 4 hours play), it would have to be €200-250. For a campaign the rate would actually be higher...

Legends & Lore: Experience Points and Levels

In the new arcticle M. Mearls discusses a topic which seems rather old for us at ENWorld.

    Living with low expectations?

While I do share your concern/disgust about the situation, I wouldn't want to pass judgement on the tenants. I'd assume that their behaviour is a symptom rather than a cause. Have you ever seen the home of some compulsive hoarder or the people who support dozens or hundreds of animals in their...

D&D 5E (2014) Should Next reintroduce new initiative rolls every round?

No from me. It's either group initiative rolled every round or individuak initiative rolled once.

... and learn that she stumbled down the stairs to the cellar landing in her tailbone. Ouch! Why is the expression "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" crossing my mind, I wonder. :.-(

OD&D Advice wanted going back to a OD&D game for nostalgia

You OP sounds like the players have no prior experience with old D&D versions. Rest assured much dying will happen regardless of the number of HP on first level. Fine things like traps and poison aside, on level 1 they won't have any CLW, healing will take a lot of time, thus each hp loss is a...

    Narrate This 3 HP Hit

"She gets hit for 3 hp." Losing 3 of 16 hp isn't anything special. If I wanted to get all flowery for such a hit, I'd soon repeat myself. Games session would be spent with inept odes to the banal. Better to spare me the effort and the players the pain.

OD&D Advice wanted going back to a OD&D game for nostalgia

If you're playing RAW, be prepared for lots of casualties. Be upfront to the players about it and prepare a handout for character generation without your help. Otherwise you'll spend too much time rolling up replacement characters. To lessen the impact a bit you could house-rule that new...

What makes an Old School Renaissance FEEL like an OSR game?

In my book, the most striking difference between D&D 3+ and OSR games is that in OSR the player decides based on the character concept, while in 3+ decision is based on the characfter sheet. All the detail provided by the rules in 3+ is replaced by description and interpretation. To take this...

2014: The End of Character Classes?

No. D&D has always been the game for simple concepts and it should continue to be so. I want D&D to be the game where the description "Dwarven fighter with chainmail and axe" transports the message to the whole community. Why should D&D try to emulate what other games are successfully doing?

Legends & Lore: What Worked, What Didn't

I'm not yet sure what to think about ad/disad. While it's cool to boil down the whole bonus/penalty business, one can go too far in this direction. And if the gate are thrown open to allow for different mechanisms beyond ad/disad, the whole simplification and speed-up it brings will soon be history.
