    Dispel Magic & Permanency?

Our wizard has a Tongues spell made permanent on himself. What happens when he has Dispel Magic cast on him? I couldn't find anything under Dispel Magic or Permanency. I figure that the Dispel Magic could only temporarily suppress the Tongues spell since it has been made permanent. However, if...

    Improved Toughness?

OK, we've got two different issues going on here. Forget about whether the feat is "useful" or not. Instead, does it make sense for Improved Toughness NOT to require Toughness. Hypersmurf has shown that, yes, it makes sense for a 1st-2nd lvl character who will never progress any further but for...

    Improved Toughness?

I realize a fighter wouldn't see much of a difference at 15th-lvl, but for a wizard that's (on average) 6 levels worth of hp in one shot (2.5 x 6). And sometimes there IS a lack of good feats for a character. I know several players who have been unable to find a feat that suits their character...

    Improved Toughness?

Improved Toughness is from the Complete Warrior. It gives +1 hp per HD both retroactively and in the future. The pre-req is a +2 Fort save. So a 12th-lvl character who takes it gains +12 hp in one shot and an additional +1 for all future levels. Is this not overpowered!?!? Why wouldn't every...

    Healing NPC's

It would be useful as a healer, but IIRC it's significantly underpowered for a (PC) class.

    Healing NPC's

Wow. This is timely. IMC the P's cleric was originally a player but that person has moved on and is no longer playing. We kept the character as an NPC though. As the group got bigger and bigger (we're up to 7 characters now), I made it clear that the cleric would be stepping out of the limelight...

Help tracking time, food & water

That last post gave me an idea. If your players insist on constantly resting, have them role-play the downtime with a topic relevant to their characters. "So, the P is resting for the third time in the past 24 hours. Character X, tell the rest of the P a little bit about your native land and...

Help tracking time, food & water

If they're getting cocky about resting and taking their sweet time to finish the adventure, make them pay for their arrogance. Hammer them and hammer them hard with encounters. Have the enemy start coming to them. And hit them in waves. Pretty soon, they won't be able to get their spells back...

There's also "Of Ships and Sea" by TSR, D&D 2E.

    A Farming Issue

You could also check out the 2nd Edition Druid's Handbook which had rules on farming, IIRC.

    Reduce?

In 3.0, this could be cast on objects, right? I just noticed in 3.5 that it is people or animals only. Or am I on drugs or something...

    Vow of Poverty

Exactly. I see you understand my point.

    Vow of Poverty

I'd agree that it is possible for a character with VoP to claim magic items (or even wealth) for charity. Just make sure that the character gets absolutely nothing out of the deal (including goodwill). Otherwise, the character is still gaining a benefit from material wealth.

Sorcerer or Wizard for a monk?

Thanks everyone. We were both thinking Wiz is best but we wanted to make sure we weren't overlooking something the Sor has to offer. Another advantage of wiz is access to all Knowledge skills, not just Arcana.

Sorcerer or Wizard for a monk?

Yeah, we know monk is powerful, but back to the real question: Sorcerer or Wizard, which is better and why?

    XP Awards?

So, if 4-5 encounters are "normal," what range of EL should I be looking at for a single, final encounter with the villain? If +4 EL has a 50% survival chance, does that sound about right? i.e. 4 10th-lvl characters vs. a single CR 14 enemy? Or an enemy with minions that totals EL 14? Too easy?

    XP Awards?

I've discovered a little problem. IMC, the P usually ends up in the final confrontation with the villain after they are fully rested and prepared. Usually. The villain is also usually fully rested and prepared. My question is this: does encounter level take this into account or (IIRC) does it...

Mastering the rules? Is it really possible?

It's all about application and repetition. You'll never master all the rules simply by reading them. You need to apply them. I got quite good at 2E rules but now I'm a relative newbie in 3.5. It just takes time. Every time we use grappling rules, it gets a little easier.
