Sorcerer or Wizard for a monk?

Ok, how about "Monks absolutely rock...starting at about 12th level!" ;)

Hehehe. Well, like any class, that depends on how you tweak 'em. ;)
Try slapping a Vow of Poverty on him from the Book of Exalted Deeds. Pour all your ability points into Wisdom (which adds to monk's AC), then take Intuitive Strike as a bonus exalted feat (adds Wis. rather than Str. to Atk.) then take Ki of the Masters as a regular feat (adds Wis. rather than Str. to Dmg.). Combine that with all of a Monk's and Vow of Poverty's special abilities and you're going to have a monk who's just stupid powerful. :D
Plus if the monk's a human, they can take both the Vow feats at first level and start play with the Vow of Poverty. ;)

I generally prefer Sorceror for arcane spellcasting, but in this case I think i would say wizard would be better. He would do three levels, so he would have access to some 2nd level spells. Also, after he goes back to monk, he would still be able to continue to get spells from scrolls and such. So he could potentially have quite a list of spells to choose from. I can see this build becoming quite useful in a campaign. If he has the time to prepare he could get quite powerful indeed.

I'd go for wizard. He'll rely on his monk abilities usually, so he can have a few selected spells prepared (See invis, invisibility, shield twice and mage armour). Go for specialist.

Sorcerer would give him more spells/day, but most of the spells wouldn't last much longer than one combat anyhow. And it's all about the level two spells here.

If he's really intent on 3 levels I agree with wizard. But one or two, definately sorc. It fits the monk style better imo, and there are a couple of 1st level spells that are damn nice for a monk and you'll want to use over and over (true strike and enlarge person come to mind)

With only 3 levels wizard trumps sorcerers. 2nd level spells are useful, and the ability to learn spells from scrolls, means you can have a lot of the utility spells that don't relay on caster level much.

Remember at level 10+ caster level 1 damage spells are going to be useless, but I assume that you already realized that.
