D&D 5E (2014) Observations and opinions after 8 levels and a dragon fight

Is there a difference between 3e and 3.5 in this regard? Because 3.5 Blindsight requires line of effect, which means it is blocked by solid objects. http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Blindsight_and_Blindsense 3.5 Blindsight is also full of exceptions based on the nature of the creature, so if...

D&D 5E (2014) CR and Encounter Difficulty: Is It Consistently Wrong?

I don't care that much about the inexact nature of CR. My main concern is awarding appropriate XP, and the guidelines in the rules are wholly inadequate for that. I always award bonus XP when the party is outnumbered because that's always a harder fight. There's also no such thing as "no XP for...

    D&D 5E (2014) Moonbeam, Am I reading it right?

Flaming sphere and cloud of daggers are two other excellent, lasting 2nd-level spells that cause guaranteed damage. Cloud of daggers needs someone to push enemies into it, but it also deals damage that is less swingy and of a type that is almost never resisted. These are all good spells, all on...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is Hoard of the Dragon Queen such a bad adventure?

Changing ruleset, maybe, if you buy into the notion that they HAD to get an adventure out before the rules were written. But massive typos and terrible maps? Why would you forgive that? There's simply no excuse. It was a rush job resulting in a shoddy final product, an embarrassment to everyone...

D&D 5E (2014) Observations and opinions after 8 levels and a dragon fight

You added the bit in bold, just like you've been misquoting and misinterpreting the text throughout this entire discussion.

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks seem pointless

Good thing they were talking about short rests! Rope trick allows you to safely take one nearly whenever and wherever you want.

    D&D 5E (2014) Some 5ed Questions

That's highly variable, depending on what they are searching for -- so you're right; there's no hard-and-fast rule, apart from the fact that passive Perception is instantaneous. I usually say it takes a round to actively search a 5-foot cube. (You might think that's too short and decide it...

D&D 5E (2014) Question about classes and spells

Be aware that there are several feats that give you access to other classes' cantrips. If your player is willing to start as a human, he can take one of those feats immediately without disturbing the game balance at all. Or he can wait until level 4 and take such a feat, no matter what race he...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is Hoard of the Dragon Queen such a bad adventure?

All this talk of "you don't have to do this or that" is absurd. The adventure pretty clearly instructs the DM to prod the PCs into certain actions, whether through NPC interactions, leading circumstances, or flat-out blocking the paths that actually make sense. It punishes (or withholds rewards...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's on your psionics wishlist for 5E?

False dichotomy -- it can be an add-on that all characters in a given campaign have access to, as in Dark Sun.

    D&D 5E (2014) What's on your psionics wishlist for 5E?

Well, Siphersh's ability check idea, for one thing. That would be a significant mechanical departure from how arcane classes work. While I agree that it has to be more than a reskin, I feel it's taking things too far to say that every possible implementation would amount to a reskin --...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you run Warding Bond and Protection from Energy or Poison combination

There is some room for interpretation here: "Also, each time it takes damage, you take the same amount of damage." It doesn't say that the damage you take is of the same type, but then again, I don't believe there's such a thing as untyped damage in 5e, so maybe it's implied. I'd certainly...

    D&D 5E (2014) Invocations that grant spells

These questions are directed at people who play warlocks and have chosen one or more invocations that grant once-per-day access to a spell. (I'm not asking about invocations that give you at-will spells.) Are you happy with your decision? Do you find it's worth it to sink both an invocation and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks seem pointless

Hex is certainly not a spell every warlock should expect to have on all the time. There are enough extremely powerful concentration spells on the warlock list that it can be a perfectly reasonable choice to forgo a bit of damage when control is what's needed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks seem pointless

It's free to do it once during your turn. You don't get to stow a weapon and draw a wand, for example, but you could drop the weapon (or take one hand off a two-handed weapon) and draw a wand. And you certainly can't draw a wand, cast a spell, and stow the wand, so if you're using a two-handed...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is Hoard of the Dragon Queen such a bad adventure?

Don't get me wrong; there's plenty of bad storytelling, and the basic lack of organization in the book is legendary. I did say the writers were only partially excused. I will never forgive them for most of what goes on in Greenest.

D&D 5E (2014) Why is Hoard of the Dragon Queen such a bad adventure?

I really don't understand this response. It doesn't take tons of time to create an original campaign. In fact, I would argue that it takes at least as much time to read the AP and become familiar enough with it that you don't constantly screw things up or drag the game to a halt because you have...

D&D 5E (2014) Why is Hoard of the Dragon Queen such a bad adventure?

Oh, really? Have you gotten to the encounter "No Room at the Inn?" I'll be interested to see how much you enjoy that one if he plays it as written.

That's sneak attack. ren1999 and I were referring to the assassinate class feature of the assassin archetype.
